Hey alums! Lots going on in the philosophy department as the university converts to semesters and gets ... rebranded. https://i1.wp.com//wp-co/uploads/2015/11/Cattle_brand.png But right now, we're hoping for news updates from all of you: important professional and personal accomplishments and milestones, you name it. E-mail me ([email protected]) with updates. More info to come on fall events on campus, including World Philosophy Day November 15 and a December Ethics Bowl event!

Exciting news: A new university center at Cal Poly Pomona, the California Center for Ethics and Policy (CCEP), will officially begin operations next month. CCEP will be housed in the Department of Philosophy and will be distinctive among academic ethics centers in two ways. First, CCEP will have a regional orientation, focusing on ethics and policy questions that are particularly acute in California or where California has taken a national or global leadership role. Second,... CCEP’s research-oriented programs, which include workshops, public lectures, a student seminar, and a student research conference, will have an annual theme. For 2018-19, the theme is Health Care Access and Health Justice. The 2019-20 theme will be The Military in California’s Culture and Economy. This thematic focus will enable more in-depth and systematic investigations of the ethics and policy questions CCEP’s programs will address. Dr. Michael Cholbi will be CCEP's director. We will kick off CCEP programs with an on-campus Election Fair on October 9. This event will combine a voter registration drive with a ballot propositions fair, where representatives for and against the state’s 12 November ballot propositions will educate the public about their stances. This will be followed by an Ethics Bowl Celebration and Reunion in December, and a full slate of workshops and lectures in the spring of 2019. The existence of CCEP is largely due to the generosity of the university’s alumni and emeritus faculty. I would urge all of you (and I’m especially looking at you Cal Poly alumni!) to provide the support necessary to launch and sustain CCEP. If you are interested in providing financial support for CCEP (not just major donations every dollar counts!), contact Dr. Cholbi ([email protected]) or Liliane Ribeiro ([email protected]) about contributing to the CCEP/Blumner fund.
