#phenixremembers Today in 1966, was one of the Fire Department of New York’s (FDNY’s) darkest days prior to September 11th, 2001. 12 firefighters perished when the first floor collapsed in the building of the Wonder Drug Store on 23rd Street in Manhattan. As part of a recent construction project, a common cellar under two buildings was renovated, removing a load-bearing dividing wall that had supported the floor above. The fire underneath the store weakened the wooden beams ...while the thickness of the floor prevented firefighters from feeling the extreme heat below. A 15-by-35-foot section of the floor collapsed at 10:39 pm, one hour and three minutes after the initial alarm was transmitted, causing ten firefighters to fall into the burning cellar. Two other firefighters on the first floor were killed in a flashover. To honor the legacy of bravery, heroism, and service to others exhibited by the 12 FDNY Firefighters killed in the line of duty, the FDNY Foundation announced the creation of the 23rd Street Fire Legacy Fund, to support the ongoing FDNY Campaign for Training and Education. It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of a beloved member of our Phenix Family, retired Battalion Chief Pete Blakemore. He was an extremely well-respected leader in the fire industry and a great friend to all who knew him.
