Just 'cause ...

Peter's Landing Marina 23.12.2020

Plenty of room to safely distance while shopping for one-of-a-kind treasures - shopping online has its place in our lives but it doesn't feed the holiday spirit like strolling through, stopping to chat with the artists themselves, and hearing the sounds and smelling the scents of the season.

NEW this year... I know a lot of you who are normally gathering your family and friends to view from the ends of the dock to cheer the parade going by are hesitant to risk crowds, even small ones of your dock neighbors, and here is the solution! Heat up some cider or hot cocoa, (or even something stronger since you aren't driving) and watch from the comfort of your easy chair! There were 76 boats signed up, getting their last-minute marching orders and picking up their numbered banners at the Skipper's Meeting on Thursday night! Merry watching!

CALLING all Peter's Landing Boaters ... the best way to SEE the parade is to be in it ... this is your year if you have ever considered joining in the fun ... go to www.hhboatparade.org to learn EVERYthing you need to know to make everlasting memories! If you are staying dockside to view, remember that our gates will NOT be open so make arrangements in advance with any guests to be able to contact you for entry/exit! The parking will be MORE than challenging... arrive early afternoon and don't leave in your car if you get a parking spot... rideshare if possible, meet your 'quaranteam' offsite, and then all UBER/LYFT together. If you are staying cozy at home the Saturday night parade will be LIVE-STREAMED for the first time! Stay safe everyone!

December 7, 1941: 'a date that will live in infamy' is the day we honor and remember the 2,403 service members and civilians who were killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on that Sunday morning. A further 1,178 people were injured in the attack, which permanently sank two U.S. Navy Battleships (the USS Arizona and the USS Utah) and destroyed 188 aircraft. A virtual half-staff flag salute and a sincere thank you to all who served!

Hot off the presses ... (Thanksgiving Day Edition of The Log) ... for you 'doubters' that are calling to see if the Boat Parade in Huntington Harbour is still 'on', YES. The first of 2 nights is 2 weeks from today ... don't get overwhelmed by following a theme ~ it's just a suggestion for the home decorating and the boats but more important that you participate in the spirit of the season ... dig out a couple of strings of lights or a blow-up snowman ... easy peasy ... add a couple of folks from your 'bubble', Christmas Cookies, hot chocolate or cider and make memories! Sat. + Sun., Dec. 12 + 13 ... for everything you need to know: http://www.hhboatparade.org/

Proof Positive! Haven't wanted to post anything until the rumors that have been swirling for the last 3 weeks were confirmed that it will be MOTHER'S MARKET & KITCHEN that will be taking the space on the corner previously been occupied by Panda Palace and most recently by That's Amore. If you are not familiar with this small supermarket chain (8? locations in SoCal), check 'em out at their Facebook Page +/or their website: www.mothersmarket.com

While there is NOTHING about THIS Thanksgiving that is anything like years past ... well, except for the ubiquitous Green Bean Casserole ... there is MUCH to be thankful for. Open your hearts, reach out to loved ones by whatever means available, and share happy memories of times past and of those no longer with us, and DO count your blessings and share the love.

Read and Heed! The Huntington Harbour Boat Parade on Saturday and Sunday evenings, December 12 + 13 is still on ... if you have EVER thought about joining in but were swamped with other pressing tasks, activities, those have likely been reduced considerably. Make some memories this year and join in the festivities ~ put up a couple of cheery strings of lights, a wreath on the pulpit, fly a flag, and create a playlist of favorite carols in keeping with the theme 'America Strong ~ Revel In The Rhythm'

Sooo moving ... Firefighters across the land come together with but one goal - that of honoring the 343 who lost their lives responding to the attacks on the World Trade Center 19 years ago on September 11, 2001. In full gear, Firefighters participate in the annual stair climb with the goal of reaching 110 floors (2071 steps) - the number of floors to reach the top of the Twin Towers. # NEVER FORGET!

Fly the United States Flag at Half-Staff on Friday, September 11, 2020 in Honor of Patriot Day Friday, September 11th, 2020 marks the 19 year anniversary of the... 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93 which crashed in suburban Pennsylvania. Space nerds will find this very long post fascinating .. there are charts to help you locate in the sky (binoculars a big plus - or telephoto lens on your camera) - seen at dawn for a couple more days then at sunset for the remainder of the month - there is a cool video of the comet seen from the International Space Station as it hurtles around the earth at over 17,000 mph. And forget about making plans to view this comet’s next apparition in Earth’s skies. Comet NEOWISE might be visible again from Earth, but not until around the year 8,786!

So many of our boaters are looking forward to the upcoming Independence Day 3-Day holiday weekend and are planning get-togethers with their families and possibly some of their 'posse' with whom they feel safe sharing some space out in the sunshine and fresh air. While COVID-19 is a looming concern for us all, the cancelation of many public fireworks displays to discourage crowds is leading some to think they might just provide their own pyrotechnics in celebration of the 4th ...of July. Keep in mind that NO fireworks are permitted on the beach side of PCH (HUGE FINE$) or allowed in any public or commercial property so that excludes the marina and the marina's rules/regs prohibit ... and for GOOD reason .. there is NO PLACE safe aboard (or even nearby) a boat with gallons of fuel and other flammable materials aboard. And another reminder about keeping an eye on your guests to discourage over-imbibing, even if the captain is acting as 'designated driver' and waiting until the safe return to the dock to 'have a cold one' - passengers are the responsibility of the captain the moment the boat leaves the dock. Boats can present an unstable platform in the best conditions but add sun, wind, chop, and injuries (or worse) from falls can easily happen. Agencies from all 50 states will be participating in Operation Dry Water placing law enforcement officers on the waterways to enforce Boating Under the Influence (BUI) laws. DO enjoy your time spent on a boat and DO be careful and STAY SAFE! See more

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! This JUST in from Gregg Smith, Public Affairs Officer at Naval Weapons Station, Seal Beach. 2:04 PM, 6/16/20 "Good afternoon. FYI, tomorrow morning Anaheim Bay will be closed to civilian boat traffic for approximately one hour so that a temporary dredging pipeline can be placed across the bottom of the channel. This iconic photo has been shared many times in the last 3 days but in case you missed it ... with the Island opening up to visitors again after weeks of 'lockdown', the bison will retreat to the hillsides once more. Remember that they are faster than they look and maintain a safe distance if trying to take your own snapshot.

And now the good news for those that favor Avalon ... shore boats are running but limited hours - just 10 am - 5pm so don't get stuck ashore! Follow the protocols in place so they can STAY open to visitors that drive the economy. Remember to honor our fallen this weekend that gave their lives to protect our rights and freedoms as you are rejoicing in the fact that our freedoms are slowly returning.

It's not too late to catch a glimpse of the last SuperMoon of 2020 ... the most dramatic views are when you can catch it just as it pops up so there is a point of reference against the horizon ... or buildings ... or trees within your view. Tonight, May 7, moonrise begins at 8:17pm in the SouthEast about half an hour after sunset. It will shine nearly as brightly tomorrow night if you can't catch it tonight. I'm setting my alarm! Not like we have anywhere to go but if we wanted to we CAN walk on the beach again ... you just have to be actively moving and maintain that safe social distance ... Surf City USA suggests the visual of the length of a surfboard's distance apart!

I get an email nightly announcing what is being celebrated the following day and I can look ahead for anything that might be of interest for our newsletter ... National Doughnut Day (in June, I think), Earth Day (next Wednesday) and some pretty obscure ones but tomorrow is one I can get behind wholeheartedly ... in fact, I've been celebrating it all month long while working primarily from home! Drumroll ... NATIONAL WEAR YOUR PAJAMAS TO WORK DAY! Who's celebrating with me?
