Alpaca are hermanos to llamas. Over 80% of the world’s alpaca population lives in Peru, mainly in the highlands or altiplano of the Andean Mountains at 3,500 to 4,500+ meters above se a level. Alpaca thrive in this harsh environment, consuming mainly indigenous grasses, where temperatures can fluctuate between -20C to +30C daily, due to the thermal properties of their sumptuous coats. ‘’Baby alpaca’’ refers to the width of the fiber shorn from the alpaca and is often foun...d in the first shearing of an animal. The thinnest, finest threads yield the highest quality alpaca fiber and are separated from others after microscopic inspection. Alpaca comes in over 40 naturally-occurring colors from ivory to brown to grey and black (less common), with infinitely more available through the blend of ancient and modern dying techniques practiced in the dye houses of Peru today. Alpaca fiber is comparable to cashmere, mohair and merino wool, although notably silkier, lighter and more breathable than cashmere, warmer than wool, and with a delicate luster. Naturally hypoallergenic, extremely resilient, and non-flammable, alpaca fibers have a tubular shape that insulates you with body heat in cold weather, and lets you breathe through the fabric in warmer weather.
