Did you know that on this day in 1895, the Navy awarded the first submarine building contract to the John P. Holland Torpedo Boat Co.? Unfortunately, wireless communications as we know them today did not exist back then. All communications were done via WIRED telegraph- something that was impossible to do with a submarine. The U.S. Navy experimented with a variety of communications methods, including the use of lights and homing pigeons- all which helped shaped our current (and highly advanced) submarine communications systems. Although the lack of an integrated communications system meant that the USS Holland (SS1) was used mainly as training platform, it proved that a submersible ship was both sustainable for underway periods and an asset to our Nation’s defense.

Did you know that Feb. 17th marked the 150th anniversary of the third and final sinking of the Confederate Submarine H.L. Hunley captained by Lt. George Dixon and his crew of seven? The Hunley and crew made their way out into the Charleston Harbor on the dark night of February 17th to engage in battle with the USS Housatonic. There are still many unanswered questions related to the actual sinking of both vessels which still remain under investigation. PEO C4I PMW 170/770 p...rovided the funding for surveillance until the vessel was raised from the depths of the Charleston harbor. The well-known author and investor in the recovery operation, Clive Cussler, has been instrumental in financially supporting the unlocking of the answers. This is one of many historical events that contributed to submarine chronology and current undersea dominance. See more

Ever been curious about C4I equipment in use? Check out our photos of U.S. Marines using the DJC2 and the RRK to provide real-time support during Operation Damayan. Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD) personnel provided real-time joint command and control and communication and expeditionary disaster response support to Operation Damayan efforts in the Philippines between Nov. 8 and Dec. 1, 2013. Operation Damayan was a joint U.S. military disaster re...sponse mission being executed by Joint Task Force-505 to provide typhoon Haiyan relief efforts since the storm devastated the central islands of the Philippines on Nov. 8, 2013. The 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force deployed their Deployable Joint Command and Control (DJC2) Early Entry System and two DJC2 Rapid Response Kits (RRK) to establish rapid on-the-ground command and control capabilities (C2). NSWC PCD provided technical authority over the units and provided constant support as requested by the U.S. Marines in the Philippines. Additionally, NSWC PCD personnel in Japan provided Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) system support to Naval Beach Unit 7 (NBU 7), based in Sasebo, Japan. The DJC2 Early Entry (EE) system provides up to three networks, operator positions for up to 40 users, video teleconferencing, voice-over IP (VoIP) and voice over secure IP phones, robust satellite communications, and supporting infrastructure. The DJC2 RRK provides reach back capability on two networks, video teleconferencing, VoIP and voice over secure IP phones, and satellite communications. Network services have been extended from the deployed DJC2 system into the buildings where the JTF command staff is operating. The DJC2 RRKs provided communication capabilities at the Philippine Air Force airport and helped to coordinate relief efforts established in Manila since the devastating storm hit the islands.
