The Port continues to work closely with state and federal partners to investigate the source of the petroleum seeping from the shore and Bay floor into Hyde Street Harbor, and to contain and remove the petroleum. Next week we will resume our site investigation work in the area by advancing soil borings. The planned soil boring work will help us better understand the composition and nature of the petroleum product that is seeping into the Bay. This data will be vital to t...he investigation into the source and identification of other potentially responsible party(ies). Beginning on February 16th, eleven direct-push soil borings will be advanced to depths of approximately 25 feet below ground surface to facilitate soil and groundwater sampling. This work is expected to be completed within three days. Expect to see a drill rig and support trucks onsite for the duration of this work. Thank you for your continued patience and support as we continue to investigate the source of the petroleum seep and contain and remove petroleum. The Port is working closely with state and federal partners to investigate the source of the petroleum seeping from the shore and Bay floor into Hyde Street Harbor, and to contain and remove the petroleum. The Port and partner agencies are working together under an incident command structure. Daily petroleum containment and removal measures continue along the Wharf J9 and J10 shoreline. The current containment includes two 300 foot-long rings of containment one for Wharf... J9 and the other for J10; and containment under the Al Scoma Bridge to prevent sheen from flowing from the Outer Lagoon (Wharf J9 and J10 area) into the Inner Lagoon. All recoverable petroleum is removed from the water once or twice each weekday depending on accumulation rates, and as-needed each weekend. Over 2,000 gallons of oily water is estimated to have been collected so far, which includes over 170 gallons of petroleum which will be recycled. As an environmental partner and steward, the Port of San Francisco will continue with every effort to minimize the impact of this incident on our tenants, visitors, recreational and commercial users of the Bay, the local wildlife that call the Bay home, and the Bay itself. San Francisco’s southern waterfront includes a mix of industrial and residential uses and key city assets, such as the Southeast Wastewater Treatment Plant. The surrounding waterfront neighborhoods are ethnically diverse, with large Black, Asian, and Latino populations and a strong African American cultural legacy.
