Now that summer is creeping just around the corner, sudden power outages may unlikely pop out of nowhere when you least expect it. These outages can be frustrating and troublesome, especially if they last 2 hours or more. The inconvenience of prolonged power outages, such as wasting perishable food, or not having a way to communicate with the outside world, etc. can be minimized by taking a few simple steps. * Purchase an inexpensive styrofoam cooler when you don't need it.... Place it in a location that is accessible in case you need to find it in the dark. * Always have at least 4 or 5 ice trays filled with water inside your freezer. Surrounding your food with ice in your styrofoam cooler after a few hours of no electricity will keep food colder during prolonged ouwer outage. * Flashlights come in handy if the power outage happens in the evening. I always have at least 3 around my home, at least one next to your bedside, one by the front door entrance, one by the kitchen. * Have plenty of new batteries accessible in your home. * It wouldn't hurt to have a battery-operated radio handy, so you won't have to use your cell phone all the time to check stats and updates in your city. * Keep a digital quick-response thermometer handy so you can quickly check the internal temperature of your food to ensure they are cold enough to use safely. * Do you have a backup power unit if someone in your home is dependent on a life-sustaining, electric-powered equipment? Purchase one that doesn't need to be charged 100% at all times. * Non-cordless phones generally work even without electricity. Invest in one if you still use landline phones in your home. * As soon as the power goes out, you'll need to unplug sensitive electrical equipment around your house. I'm talking about personal home computers, printers, TV, even audio equipment. Once the power comes back on, electrical power spikes can cause damage to delicate electronics. * Make it a habit to always keep your cell phone charged when you are home, so you can use it in case of an emergency. * Good news! SoCal Edison has a new Mobile App called the Outage Map (https://www.sce.com/maps/v01242014/A026_05676.pdf). Simply download the app from Google Play for Androids or the iTunes Store if you have an iPhone. I'll write about this in another post for you with info on why you should have it in your phone. Stay tuned! Lighten up, Your Park4200 Community Manager https://www.sce.com/maps/v01242014/A026_05676.pdf
