What had seemed like hours of contemplation were mere moments in the real world. The demon witch's face roamed over his own as she sniffed him like a hound. Her skin was drawn tight over sharp cheekbones. The two uneven gashes on her nose flared open with each breath, and her teeth were brown and cracked. "Not much fight in you," she said, wearing a smug expression. Then something caught her eye. Tazizu looked down in surprise to see the white energy flowing like waterfalls from Kasai’s vibrating palms. Stop! She commanded. The crackle of her voice betrayed her fear. Kasai’s air xindu flowed through his limbs. He drew back both elbows and shifted his right leg back to take the weight of his body. Then his earth xindu anchored his foot to the ground. With a thought, his fire xindu exploded outwards, sending his open palms into Tazizu’s chest. She flew backward with her arms and legs trailing like pennants in the wind. Kasai wasted no time snatching Ninziz-zida up from the ground. The Fire Serpent blazed to life in his hands. "You see now with open eyes," the ancient weapon said in his mind. He remained oddly calm as Tazizu rose on unsteady legs. Her body shivered in the blue light from Ninziz-zida’s fire. Kasai watched her exposed flesh ripple like the surface of a lake caressed by an autumn breeze. It was a poetic thought for a gruesome deed. Tazizu gritted her rotten teeth as she fumbled for a discarded whip that was no longer at her hip. Blood bubbled from her mouth, distorting the words of a malformed spell that dribbled out of her quivering lips. "She is finished," Ninziz-zida hissed, not with anger, but with certainty. "There is more work to do." But Kasai waited. The release of so much energy left him weary and panting for breath. One of Tazizu’s hands went to her chest, then the other went to her abdomen as her torso shook with uncontrollable force. Her eyes raised to Kasai in shock. She tried to speak, but only mumbled sounds came from her blood-stained mouth. She fell to her knees, screamed once, then keeled over into the dirt. The seams of the hides she wore split. Tazizu stared up at Kasai one last time with eyes filled with hate just as her chest and back exploded in a fountain of gore. Horrible, Kasai said. He took a moment to steady his trembling legs. Fierce fighting sounded nearby. Tired as he was, Ninziz-zida was right. Kasai spun back again but fell into the circle of dead men that made up the boundary of their mini arena. He stumbled over the pile but scrambled quickly to his knees. Oziax was there and struck down with a mighty blow. It was too late to dodge the blade. Instinctively, Kasai shot up his arms and clamped the sword between his hands. Blue light erupted from the cobalt marks on his palms. Impossible! No one can stop the might of Eishorror, Oziax shouted as he threw Kasai off the sword. Kasai tumbled away. He stood up fast and was rewarded by a terrible backhanded blow across his face. Kasai was battered, bruised, cut, and now bloodied. Even with Ninziz-zida in hand, he had only managed to annoy the demon warlord. And he was running out of tricks. The woman went straight for the vargru. Her movement was more of a spiraling dance rather than a sprint. She moved her arms in rhythmic gestures while she twirled through the air. Kasai saw strange, autumn-colored runes trailing from her hands. The magic rose higher and twisted in the air behind her head. She acted as if she didn’t care about the danger closing in on her. She spread her arms wide, keeping her palms down over the grassy field. The grass between her and speeding vargru trembled and convulsed. Both vargru leaped into the air. In the same moment, the living earth erupted between them, morphing into the shape of a giant humanoid. Dirt, grass, and flowers covered its outer skin. Thick roots spiraled together, then overlapped to make up its arms and legs. Branches and leaves sprouted from all directions across its vast bulk. The earth golem snatched one of the vargru from the air with an enormous hand. It snapped its neck with a quick flex.

VILLAINS vs HEROES...Who's Better? I'm wondering if you find yourself rooting for the villain in a story more than the hero? I know I do at times. Watching an underdog overcome impossible odds to save the day is great, but Vader is still Vader and was always the first action figure I chose for my team. (Ya, I'm that old). So, I'm curious, who's your favorite villain, and more importantly, why? Ok, ok, let's give the heroes their due and include them in the conversation. Who'...s your favorite hero, and why? For me...hmm, I tend to go for villains who are not just scoundrels but think, in their own warped way, that THEY are the hero of the story. So, I was glad Ramsey Bolton got his just rewards, but genuinely fascinated by Gollum's insanity. (Admit it, you'd try the ring on for size, too). So, let me know. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
