Joe Davies Heritage Airpark by Palmdale Parks and Recreation

All City of Palmdale administrative and business offices, South Antelope Valley Emergency Services (SAVES), the Palmdale Playhouse, Legacy Commons for Active Seniors, Chimbole Cultural Center, and Palmdale City Library will be closed today in observance of Memorial Day. The City will host a Memorial Day Ceremony today at 9 a.m. at Poncitlán Square Gazebo, 38315 9th Street East, Palmdale (between Avenues Q-9 and Q-10.) The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limit...ed and attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs and handheld umbrellas to offer protection from the sun. COVID-19 safety protocols including facial coverings and social distancing will be required. To report emergencies after hours, weekends or on holidays, residents may call 661/267-5338 or download the Recycle Coach app through the Google Play or Apple App store. Issues may also be reported online at www.CityofPalmdale.org. Emergencies include sewer overflows, roadway/right of way hazards including downed tree limbs, downed signs and potholes, or broken sprinkler lines in City parks and landscaped areas.

Two NASA Flight Opportunities-supported technologies are set to take off on Virgin Galactic ’s SpaceShipTwo. The flight will be the first for the rocket-pow...ered suborbital space plane from New Mexico’s Spaceport America. Both innovations aboard have evolved over the course of previous flights on different commercial vehicles. An electromagnetic field measurement experiment from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory has leveraged flights to establish a platform for suborbital environmental monitoring and instrument development called JANUS. The Collisions into Dust Experiment (COLLIDE) from the University of Central Florida will include improved data collection capabilities on the flight as researchers seek to better understand the behavior of dust particles in microgravity and how they are impacted by human and robotic activities on the Moon, Mars, and asteroids. https://go.nasa.gov/2W4Mn62 : Virgin Galactic

Today we commemorate the 79th Anniversary of the Attacks on #PearlHarbor. We also thank and acknowledge #PearlHarborSurvivor Robert Edward Dombrowski who served in the US Navy from 1941-1946. He was a Shipfitter 1st Class (SF1c) and received the Purple Heart, Meritorious Services Medal, Department of Defense Service Medal, Department of Navy Commendation Award and a Good Conduct Medal. Dombrowski was on the USS California when Pearl Harbor was bombed. He was injured but remained in the Navy and fought throughout WWII. His Grandson, Eric, works for the City of Palmdale in our Parks and Recreation Department. Thank you for sharing your Grandfather's story!
