PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH ALL 5TH GRADERS WHO JUST GRADUATED!! We know with the COVID-19 shut down, many of you did not get a chance to visit potential middle schools, or you've decided to play it safe and just go to your local one. We're asking that you reconsider our school--one of the best Performing Arts Magnets in the city (we've been around since 1979--we were one of the original 10 magnets)--PACOIMA MIDDLE SCHOOL FILM, MEDIA & PERFORMING ARTS MAGNET.... We're a small magnet--one of the hidden gems of the Valley. When we open in August, we will be as safe as your home school, using every precaution the district is promoting. Please watch the video below to find out about us. Not only do we have some of the highest test scores of any performing arts magnet middle school, but we have award-winning production groups in film, musical theatre, dance, drama and stage craft. And we have a gifted track for those interested! And, more important, we still have some openings. Come and take a look and see the amazing middle school experience we can offer your child! https://youtu.be/lQeSSyKKEvk

THIS IS THE PACOIMA SINGERS TRIBUTE TO THE KENT STATE SHOOTINGS, ON MAY 4, 1970, 50 YEARS AGO MONDAY. Just days after President Nixon announced that we were going to invade Cambodia--a neutral country in the VietNam War--protests occurred at virtually every university in America. At Kent State, a small university outside of Cleveland, the governor called out the National Guard. The soldiers assigned were young, and when a bottle broke, they paniced, and began to shoot live ro...unds into the crowd. Four students--none of whom were part of the protest--were killed. The picture of a girl screaming over the body of her friend became one of the most recognizable photos of the VietNam War era. After the shootings, public opinion shifted dramatically against the war. This period of American history was an example of the role that young people can have in shaping society. The War came to an end in large part because of the actions of the young people at that time. Our power, our voice, changed society. Now we need today's youth to rise up and vote in November and change our society today. In my 27 years directing the Pacoima Singers, our 60's show has always been my favorite, not only for the music, but as a teaching lesson for my students and our audience. Here is our tribute to Kent State--the 50th anniversary of which is this Monday. Please share and teach our kids about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch

Got to stay positive and look towards the future. Need help from all of you who are cleaning out your garage over the next month for the first time in years. And this message is specifically for those of you who used to collect vinyl records. (If you have a puzzled look on your face, move on to the next message).... Either this year or next year, my Pacoima Singers will finally put on their show THE LAST REAL RECORD STORE ON EARTH. We need vinyl records for props!! So--if you come across some in your cleaning, and are considering throwing them out, please donate them to us! If you find them and think you'll someday play them--please donate them (c'mon, you know you're never going to play them). You can wait until this quarantine is over to donate them, or if you really want them gone, message me and you can put them out on your driveway and I'll pick them up keeping an acceptable social distance. Thanks!! And let's all remember, we're going to get back to some semblence of normal eventually!! Plan for it.
