Are you a prospective new grad finishing your studies in an out of state or online program? We have some resources for you! Take a look at this "cheat sheet" for the steps to initiate practice in California. Note: our company offers double to triple the standard supervision: if you are interested in working in Southern California, our Staffing Director would love to speak with you! https://www.pacificcoastspeech.com//PacificCoastSpeech_Inf
Many of our students have made excellent progress in teletherapy, and are nearly ready for dismissal! This fun article has ideas on how to use Siri to practice clear and clean articulation. https://www.aptus-slt.com/post/dysarthria-exercises-siri
What a day to be a speech pathologist! Regardless of your politics, this was a historic day for our profession. 1 - The pledge of allegiance was presented with signing by the presenter - GLORIOUS 2 - Joe Biden has been very open about his struggles with stuttering: today's speech showed that any of our students struggling with stuttering can thrive and be PRESIDENT! 3 - The incredible poet has been open about her history with auditory processing issues, speech articulation issues, and excessive sensitivity to sound. She credited her challenges with inspiring her to write and encourage others to write. As a proud speech pathologist and leader of a team of extravagantly fantastic SLPs and SLPAs, it is an incredible day of celebrating our profession!!! What a moment.
Shout out to the intrepid PCSS clinical fellows of 2020-2021! Our "cohort" this year is eight strong, which is double our normal CF staff. Each one is EXTRAORDINARY in an unimaginable year: your creativity, ingenuity, technical wizardry, kindness, and grit can't be overestimated. We'd also like thank our five supervisors, who have supported the double learning curve of COVID plus school site management! We are fortunate to share your talents. Your students won the lottery, and have allowed us to continue our mission of being the BEST spot to complete a clinical fellowship in a school setting. THANK YOU!!! If any of you (or others who follow our practice's page) have any suggestions for assisting the upcoming class of CFs in May, we would love to hear them!
The SLPAB (the primary licensing agency in California for SLPs and SLPAs) has a page that they update on COVID related legislative changes. It is dense with information, but is a good portal to many of your questions. I will link the COVID page here, and will also link the page for applying to be a speech pathologist in California. Thank you, SLPAB, for working to keep our profession effective and protected! https://www.speechandhearing.ca.gov/licensees/covid19.shtml
One of our Zoom therapy sessions included a special guest today, courtesy of a student's enthusiasm. Bring on those teletherapy COVID adventures! And our rockstar SLP just.... rolled with it...
Stepping back in gratitude for our wonderful district partners and our staff. Every day, in every season, you empower those you serve with kindness and ever expanding skills. Annette and I are SO THANKFUL for you!
A sensitive and kind IEP with balance is a gift to a family. I love this story. Let's not lose track of what our words mean. https://www.yahoo.com//sobbed-first-iep-meeting-021945511.
ORGANIZATION BOGGLE! By now, we have collected lots of digital materials, but how do you keep your organized? By themes? You will love Stacy Crouse's prefilled google sheets. Her instructional video is easy to understand, and she has pre-added all of her amazing materials suitable for Fall as well as epic books, etc. You could simply add your own from this week's theme, and keep going. Here's a link to her free Google Sheet by Theme with 10 fun Fall themes. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com//Teletherapy-Activitie
Wow! Does thinking about grammar make you panic inside - just a little? Here's a fantastic chart on the order and rationale of possible targets. What a goldmine! Thank you, InformedSLP!! https://www.theinformedslp.com/how-to/grammar-chart
We need apps! Many of us are bringing out our iPads again within teletherapy or F2F. Looking for an awesome list? Check the Omazing Kids website for comprehensive listings! Watch the comments here for other ideas - or please add your favorite! https://www.pacificcoastspeech.com/ipads-and-apps-in-the-t/
There are so many great membership sites and methods for younger scholars, but what about our older students? Here's a great resource collection of our favorites!
HOT TIP for Face to Face assessments and therapy! Thanks to Laura Kosakowski Gottesman and the School-Based SLP FB group, we would like to recommend a great solution for protecting your materials during F2F therapy. These "placemats" are perfectly clear. A smart SLP could simply cover the game board before sticky fingers touched it, and quickly remove/wipe down at the end of group. Two would cover most full sized game boards. Easy to sterilize, and at $8 for four, they would be worth it! They are thick enough to hold in one hand over an assessment page. I didn't try to cut mine, but I believe you could use a strong pair of scissors or a paper cutter if necessary. .https://www.amazon.com//ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00
Wow - Eileen at Kid Time Story Time has 904 books, arranged by topic, and read with fun and energy using puppets and silly comments. LOVE this Youtube Channel for a brain break or new way to address language learning goals in the preschool/primary population. Watch a video: you'll be hooked! https://www.pacificcoastspeech.com/primary-resource-904-bo/
What a fantastic idea for the first week of school! https://cassiestephens.blogspot.com//behind-my-mask-super-
We are just starting to consider how to organize ourselves for Fall in a way that allows engaging therapy with minimal shared materials, OR remote therapy until we return. One way we are considering is by creating Google Slides, where you can link videos, games, and documents. There is a Facebook group of SLPs that are sharing many of these slides to get you started: https://www.facebook.com//2610466689273/2637972659856666/ Our next blog entry will be on this topic:.

Many of us will be using Google Slides for therapy in the Fall, since they work well with Chromebooks and Google Meets/Zoom. Stacy Crouse is everyone's favorite "explainer" of all things tele therapy! Tutorial is free! https://www.teacherspayteachers.com//Crash-Course-Using-Go
I thought this was a very interesting article on nationwide plans for the Fall. You can sort it by state or other criteria. Here we go!!! https://www.edweek.org//school-districts-reopening-plans-a
