Diabetes is a rapidly growing, serious health problem among kids today. More than 13K adolescents are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, every year in America alone. There's been an increase in the number of teenagers with type 2 diabetes as well, which was more common among adults above 40 and who were overweight. Clinics are reporting that nearly half of the new childhood diabetes cases are of type 2. Adolescents, who are obese and had type 2 diabetes in the family history, ar...Continue reading

It's well accepted that reduced physical activity and fast food are linked to obesity. But the evidence that these are the main causes of obesity is largely circumstantial. I would argue that it's more complicated than that. And even experts suggest 10 other possible causes of obesity, outlined in the International Journal of Obesity. 1. Sleep debt. Getting too little sleep can increase body weight. Today, many get less shut-eye than ever. 2. Pollution. Hormones control... body weight. And many of today's pollutants affect our hormones. 3. Air conditioning. You have to burn calories if your environment is too hot or too cold for comfort. But more people than ever live and work in temperature-controlled homes and offices. 4. Decreased smoking. Smoking reduces weight. People smoke much less than they used to. 5. Medicine. Many different drugs including contraceptives, steroid hormones, diabetes drugs, some antidepressants, and blood pressure drugs can cause weight gain. Use of these drugs is on the upswing. 6. Population age, ethnicity. Middle-aged people and Hispanic-Americans tend to be more obese than young European-Americans. Americans are getting older and more Hispanic. 7. Older moms. There's some evidence that the older a woman is when she gives birth, the higher her child's risk of obesity. Women are giving birth at older and older ages. 8. Ancestors' environment. Some influences may go back two generations. Environmental changes that made a grandparent obese may "through a fetally driven positive feedback loop" visit obesity on the grandchildren. 9. Obesity linked to fertility. There's some evidence obese people are more fertile than lean ones. If obesity has a genetic component, the percentage of obese people in the population should increase. 10. Unions of obese spouses. Obese women tend to marry obese men, and if obesity has a genetic component, there will be still more obese people in the next generation. These other contributing factors deserve more attention and study. Even more explanations include: a fat-inducing virus; increases in childhood depression; less consumption of dairy products; and hormones used in agriculture. What do you think can be attributed to the epidemic?

Today's body-weight workout!

Pacific Beach Training 15.10.2020

Proteins are very important to our bodies. It isn't just for bodybuilders who use them to gain muscle mass. Those who are sick use them to rebuild damaged tissue and even in normal states, our body uses protein for many different tasks. Proteins are made of amino acids that are folded together. There are essential amino acids - those that our body cannot make, and non essential amino acids - those that our body can make. Proteins that are made up of all the essential amino ac...ids are said to be complete while those that lack in one or more essential amino acid are incomplete. Complete proteins come from sources such as meat, eggs, cheese, dairy and soy. Incomplete proteins come mainly from vegetable sources with the one exception being soy. The ideal source should be complete proteins. For most people that isn't a problem. If you are worried about fat intake, try lean cuts of beef, chicken and turkey. For vegetarians whose main source comes from incomplete proteins, getting a variety of vegetables and whole grains throughout the day will ensure that all essential amino acids are consumed. Also, using soy protein (which is the only complete vegetable source of protein) is very beneficial.

Laura has been one of the leaders in Pacific Beach, as a friend and fitness Coach to many. She lives and breathes all things health related. Her love for constant learning is evident in her passion for sharing her knowledge and teaching others. Due to the nature of being a fitness Coach, she earns her income directly from servicing clients. When she's not working with clients or teaching classes and workshops.. she is not able to earn an income. This means Laura has a very, very difficult road ahead, as she fights back to her normal level of health, while also combating the extreme medical costs that come with brain surgery, and upcoming treatments. All funds will be given directly to Laura and her husband Colton. These funds will be used to help mend the day-to-day costs of life, the costs of her ambulance ride, emergency brain surgery, follow up surgery, as well as the ongoing medical and financial needs. Please know that anything helps. If you choose to donate enough for some groceries, or for car payments - we ask that you consider yourself in this position. What would be the things you'd need help paying for, what would be the areas that the financial strain may take hold of? From the deepest part of my heart, from the team at Pacific Beach Training: thank you very much for your contribution. And, please, I humbly and respectfully ask you to take a moment to share this with the fitness professional in your life, and with your circle of friends and family. Just simply forward this on. #Repost @dr.rachelhamel (@get_repost) Did you know this substance is detrimental to your children's health? I'm talking about fructose!... There are times when even fructose gets it right. When it’s found naturally in nutritious fruits and other starchy foods, especially in foods with a lot of fiber, fructose is actually not such a bad guy. The problem is when fructose hangs with a bad crowd. Or by itself. When fructose is chemically plucked out of healthful foods and plunked into not-so-healthful foods as a healthy sweetener, it’s anything but. Artificially manipulated fructose, consumed routinely for as little as 10 weeks, can also cause fat cells to accumulate around the heart, liver, and digestive organs. Say hello to fructose in this unnatural state and say goodbye to rock-hard abs. Then say hello to flab. And disease. The metabolic burden of digesting fructose falls solely on the liver: 100% of the breakdown of this concentrated, isolated sugar is managed there. For a while, the liver can keep up. But much like excessive alcohol, too much fructose overwhelms the liver, which causes the body to become overwhelmed by toxic metabolic byproducts. What’s the root of fructose’s bad behavior? Well, sad to say, it comes from a bad home: GMO corn. HFCS, which is arguably not even food as we normally think of it, lurks in almost anything boxed, processed, baked, or sweetened basically everything in the center aisles of the grocery store. HFCS is inexpensive and easy to produce, which is why it’s everywhere. It makes everything it touches taste sweet. But our bodies know the difference. #saturdaystyle #saturdayvibes #childrenshealth #nutrition See more
