When people (teens *ahem*) don’t brush often enough or thoroughly enough THIS can happen! A couple of these teeth already have tiny holes in them....yup, the C-word! ... How to avoid this?? What do you see? A Pediatric Dentist or mom? Muslim or American? Business owner? Daughter, sister, volunteer, runner, dedicated, contributing member of society? All of the above? There are many assumptions people make when they see me. What business owner contemplates having her photo on her website? When I first opened my practice I did. I stressed about it for a bit. But I decided that I WOULD have my photo on my website and would proudly show everyone what a kind, carin...g, expert pediatric dentist looks like! I felt it would help me to weed out the people who would see me and judge me before meeting me. I felt it gave me a feeling of control and satisfaction. It has done that. But it has also given me an opportunity to open people’s minds about the future of healthcare providers in this country, before ever meeting me! Being a dentist gives me the opportunity to heal children, help in prevention of disease, screen children for emotional and psycho social issues, evaluate speech and other pathology. But dentistry is also a business that needs constant attention and most people I meet underestimate my 5ft 2 inch frame and like to put me in a box. Who do you work for? Do you have partners? When did you take over the practice Where else do you work What does your husband think about x,y, or z These questions alone assume that I cannot possibly run a practice alone nor that I have built it from the ground up. Not only did I start my practice from scratch but I grew out of my space within 5 years. More on that in another post! Many female doctors and dentists are posting pictures in their swimsuits as a protest to a study that just came out. It was a misogynistic biased article that seemed to be an excuse to call (mostly female physicians) unprofessional and to try to control their bodies and choices. As a Muslim woman I know too well how it feels to be policed for clothing choices! So you might see me walking (or running) around Fremont and make assumptions about me. But maybe next time just ask!
