San Diego Refugee Tutoring

We had a great time celebrating our end of tutoring with Sundaes on Sunday last week! Ice cream, awards, books and scholarship announcements made up our time together! See you all on July 17th!

Last weekend we had over $4000 in hygiene products (that you all bought) distributed to each family! We also have thanks to give to the @sproutscv for providing fresh produce to our families. Virtual tutoring resumes April 6th and April 8th.

Our annual Grab & Go event was a success! One student was so thrilled about his new Vans he declared I will watch YouTube and finally learn to tie my shoes! We were able to provide each student with a pair of shoes thanks to your donations and a grant from @sandiegouniontribune.

Baking skills . Culinary skills . Arts and crafts and . Our Fun Friday a couple weeks ago, our students made paper lanterns using popsicle sticks, tracing paper, markers, and lots of tacky glue. We even brought them battery powered tea candles to place in their decorated lanterns! A huge thanks to volunteer Hannah for using her design and art talent to lead the night!

We are very grateful and thankful for our volunteers and sponsors who helped put together a Holiday Drive this weekend for our refugee students and their families. Special thanks to @hopeforsd @covenantchurchsd and the Kensington Community Church.

Our annual Thanksgiving feast would be around this time but we’re doing things a little different this year. With your help, we delivered over 1,000 lbs of produce and rice alone alone to our students and their families! It was a gigantic community effort. We even had one vehicle show up with 50 rotisserie chickens! Can you imagine how good that car smelled?

Huge thanks to Daphne, a high school SDRT tutor, who organized a 3-part series of STEM activities for 8 special girls at SDRT! For the second Fun Friday in the series, the girls learned about two women scientists, one Syrian and one Somali and built balloon pinwheels and popsicle catapults. It was a huge success! Stay tuned for more creative and innovative Fun Fridays up ahead!

Tell your friends to come tutor online with SDRT this year! It will certainly be a rewarding experience- our kids are eager to learn. We have space available in our Thursday (9/17) online New Tutor Orientation sessions for anyone interested. 4pm or 6pm. Spread the word and RSVP to attend! We have two returning tutor refreshers today at 4:00 and 5:30pm. We’ll update you on changes to the program and how we plan to utilize Zoom and online resources to support our kids.

School will look a little different this year, but the need for tutors is still there! Returning Tutor Refreshers will be on September 3rd, 8th, and 10th. Libraries closed? Schools closed? Not a problem. We launched a SDRT Traveling Library over the last two weeks that visited almost 40 families. Allowing kids to select books to read over the summer is integral in keeping them engaged in their learning. One volunteer's quote," I was like the ice cream truck but for books! Kids came running out from several apartments nearby!" We were fortunate to have such beautiful book donations as well as amazing volunteers who spent their afternoons spreading the love of reading to our students. We want these homes filled with books! Happy reading, everyone!

These two were really excited about the Kale. When I showed up, the older sister said OH, my brother loves Kale! Thanks again to @sproutscv for another generous donation! Last week we delivered fresh produce, chicken, @pampersus diapers, other supplies to 16 families. Thanks everyone for your continued support and donation!

An apron, some seaweed, a bamboo mat and an open mind gave 20 of our students a new experience at SDRT’s Fun Friday last night! They made Kimbap, a Korean sushi roll. All were very proud of their rolls. And many learned to use chopsticks! What a fantastic night. Big thanks to sisters Marilu and Mimi for prepping and leading the evening! @ City Heights

We had our first ever SDRT Fun Friday and it was spectacular! The theme was, "Baking with Mr. Tim!" After delivering all items and ingredients needed to 15 students, we met on Zoom and prepared our kitchens. We learned about fractions, handled measuring cups for the first time, and made delicious chocolatey oat cookies! What a fun night with our amazing SDRT bakers! Stay tuned for next week. On deck is "Cooking with Mimi!"

Big thanks to @sproutscv for donating fresh produce and other groceries to our families every other week! Last week we took four trunk loads of goods and distributed it to 13 families. Donations like these are integral to easing the burden for on community.
