The 1885 Liberty Nickel is regarded as the key date issue of the series. There were 1,472,700 examples originally struck for circulation at the Philadelphia Mint. A coin in any grade will carry a serious premium. The Philadelphia Mint also struck proof 1885 nickels for this year, with a total mintage of 3,790 pieces. Since the proof coins were sold to collectors, the survival rate was much higher resulting in more widespread availability. Still, it is considered a very desirable and sought after coin to complete a series. We currently have one on our eBay page with a few days left on auction, so go and have a look before you miss this killer deal! https://www.ebay.com//Ungraded-1885-P-Proof-/113227399099

Any rattler fans out there? Old Green Holders (OGH) are latter 1st generation PCGS graded coin holders that were produced from February of 1986 until September of 1989, when changes were made as a result of the counterfeit slabs that had appeared earlier. It consists of a two piece plastic holder with 4 alignments pins and has a pale green ribbed cardboard stock. They are often called rattlers because sometimes the coin is slightly loose in the case, which causes it to ratt...le around. Today they are in high demand. This is partly due to the fact that PCGS grading standards back then were a bit more strict than today, therefore a coin in a rattler may sometimes be deemed a grade higher than it’s current grade. In fact, there are collectors who purchase coins in these rattler cases, crack the coins out, resubmit them for grading, and occasionally get rewarded a better grade. As a result, this can become quite profitable too. Other collectors purchase them for their aesthetic appeal, along with other vintage grading holders. Although they are still quite common, they are growing scarcer with the passage of time. To own one of your own, visit our eBay store where we are offering a few of these timeless gems. https://www.ebay.com/str/oxbridgecoins

You’ve probably seen or heard the term before on graded coins, but may still not be so sure what it means. So what exactly is a burnished coin? Numismatists use the term burnished to describe the coins’ unique finish. Burnished coins appear matte and less shiny when compared to a standard bullion coin. This is the result of polishing the blanks before they are struck. Some collectors believe burnishing adds longevity to the design. It is important to note the U.S. Mint identi...fies burnished coins simply as uncirculated coins. The first burnished Silver American Eagle coins, released by the U.S. Mint in 2006, created a sensation among collectors. In celebration of the Silver Eagle design’s 20th anniversary, the burnished finish added distinction and rarity to the world’s most popular bullion coin. Burnished Gold Eagles and Platinum Eagles followed with enthusiastic support from numismatists. With the exception of 2009 and 2010, when the U.S. Mint was overwhelmed by demand for standard bullion, the U.S. Mint has issued a limited number of burnished Eagle coins annually. The U.S. Mint’s burnished Eagle coins are produced in limited quantities only at the West Point Mint in New York. For this reason, the coins include a W mintmark beneath the reverse image. In recent years, the U.S. Mint has expanded burnishing to some limited-quantity designs, including the popular America the Beautiful series. Burnished coins are ideal for collectors interested in a new variation on longtime favorite designs. Be sure to check out our eBay page where we have a few Burnished Silver Eagles for sale as well.

Brief history of the 1937 Roanoke Silver Commemorative Half Dollar, currently available on our eBay (www.ebay.com/sch/oxbridge-coins) graded MS66 by PCGS: A silver commemorative coin was authorized to mark the 350th anniversary of the establishment of Roanoke Colony. This early attempt to establish a permanent English settlement in America became known as the Lost Colony when all of the inhabitants mysteriously vanished. The obverse of the 1937 Roanoke Half Dollar features a ...profile portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh, who had been granted the charter for colonization by Queen Elizabeth I. The inscriptions read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, Liberty, 1937, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Half Dollar. On the reverse is an image of Ellinore Dare and her child Virginia Dare, who was the first child born in America to English parents. To each side are sailing ships and below is a pine branch. The surrounding inscriptions read The Colonization of Roanoke Island North Carolina, The Birth of Virginia Dare, In God We Trust, and the anniversary dates 1587-1937. The coins were designed by William Marks Simpson, who had also designed the Antietam Half Dollar and the Norfolk Half Dollar with his wife. Under the authorizing legislation, the Roanoke Half Dollars had a minimum mintage of 25,000 pieces and no established maximum. A total of 50,000 pieces were struck at the Philadelphia Mint in two batches. The coins were distributed through the Roanoke Colony Memorial Association of Manteo at an issue price of $1.65. Although sales levels exceeded the number of coins sold for other recent issues, eventually a large portion of the production was returned for melting, resulting in net distribution of 29,030.
