A new opportunity for composers and writers in Southern California! Original Vision is an opportunity for Overtone Industries to support creative voices in Southern California as they develop interdisciplinary work in the vein of Overtone’s mythic storytelling model. The project includes a $1,000 honorarium for each team and consists of a development period with mentorship from Overtone’s artistic leadership and will culminate in three composer/librettist teams presenting new 10-15 minute scenes directed by Overtone’s Artistic Director O-Lan Jones. Dear Friends, We are sympathetic to, and stand in support of, those who are on the frontlines of today’s fight against racism and join in saying BLACK LIVES MATTER. Our current social and political circumstances have invited Overtone’s leadership to take a closer look at what voices are being heard, and which are being left unheard. This introspective evaluation is showing us where we have succeeded and where we are found wanting. ... Overtone has always believed working with writers and actors of diverse backgrounds brings a richness and depth to the original work we produce. We celebrate our differences as an essential part of creating emotionally and culturally relevant work. No doubt, there are cultural tendencies and unconscious bias still to be seen and we hope we can find ways to do better so we can be an active part of a larger cultural shift away from the systemic white supremacy that pervades every aspect of our society. Collaboration is at the heart of our process. As we move forward with our continued mission of telling mythic narratives we invite those in our community who have historically been left without a platform to share with us how we can better help them tell their stories. We stand in solidarity for change, and also in recognition of the deep exhaustion we are all feeling in the labor of this desperately needed consciousness being born into the world.
