Happy Team Otani’s Tuesday! The last couple weeks featured our founders/great-grandparents, Helen and Izzy Otani, so this week we are featuring their son, Steve. Steve may be retired, but you can still find him inside Otani’s on Saturdays. He always walks in with a smile and prepares a special treat for lunch for the entire team. We love our Saturdays and are thankful for everything our grandpa Steve does for us. ... The Steve Special is 2 pieces of seasoned fried red snapper, 2 pieces of season fried shrimp and served with rice and salad for only $9.99. The Steve Special is half Izzy Special (4 red snapper, rice, salad) and half Helen Special (4 shrimp, rice and salad) and only available today and tomorrow (10/20-10/21). Tax not included, sorry, no substitutions.
Dine-in is open (limited capacity at 25% and still socially distanced)! Don’t forget about our modified hours!
Thank you for sharing our story, Discovering Oxnards Charm Past & Present!
Last week we featured Great-Grandma Helen, so this week we are featuring her other half, Izzy! Izzy was born here in Oxnard in 1912. He graduated from Oxnard HS and then UCLA. Before starting the Otani’s Seafood you know and love today, he worked at his dad’s many businesses and started a few of his own. Before the war, he had a produce stand with his brothers called Otani’s Bros Produce. And afternoon returning from the war, they took over and rebuilt their father’s groce...ry store and turned it into Otanis Brothers Malt Shop. Izzy left the malt shop and started Izzy Otani’s Fish Market at our current location, 608 S A Street, in 1952 and introduced a few menu items in the early 1970’s. You could always find Izzy inside Otanis or volunteering in the community. He loved people and would sit on the end of the counter so he could talk to as many people as possible. Izuto Izzy Otani passed away in 1998, but his legacy lives on. On what would have been his 100th birthday, we introduced the Izzy Special to the menu. This year, we added Izze drinks. This week’s Team Otanis Tuesday Special is a FREE Izze drink with your Izzy Special! *only valid Tuesday and Wednesday - 10/13-10/14 from 11-3pm. Please mention this special or show this post when ordering for your free Izze drink with your Izzy Special purchase.

Otani’s wouldn’t be possible without the person featured in this week’s Team Otani’s Tuesday, great-grandma Helen. We always share stories and memories about great-grandpa Izzy, but there is one person that was right next to him through it all, Helen. Helen was working as a Sunday school teacher when she met Izzy (while Izzy was attending UCLA, he lived with a family in Santa Monica and would take the family’s children to church). They married in 1936 and had 2 children. ... Helen loved family, community and church. She deeply cared about people and was always ready to volunteer. Kikue Helen Nishikawa was born in 1912 and was by Izzy’s side until her passing in 1986. In honor of great-grandma, this week’s special is the Helen Special: 4 pieces of season-fried shrimp with rice and salad for $9.99.* *Available on Tuesday and Wednesday (10/6-10/7) from 11am-3pm. Tax not included, sorry, no substitutions.
Happy Sunday! We hope you are all having a wonderful weekend!! (Thank you Margaret and Sister for the visit and photo)

Fun Fact: our restaurant started as a to-go only food counter. When great-grandpa Izzy started serving food inside Izzy Otani’s Fish Market he called it Izzy Otani’s Shrimp to-go and only served tempura shrimp and tempura fish (with rice and salad). He soon added shrimp chow mein and a shrimp foo-young to the menu (the shrimp foo-young has been removed from the main menu, but is still available on the secret menu). The menu quickly expanded along with the dining area, ...eventually taking over the grocery store and then fish market areas. Most of the menu items from the mid 70’s (about 90%) are still available today. While this time of no indoor dining has been stressful, it has reminded us of our early days and our dear great grandpa Izzy. We’re doing everything we can to keep his dream and business alive; we thank you all for the continued support. We may be stressed, but our hearts are certainly full. Plates pictured: Left: fried shrimp taco plate (2 tacos, rice and salad) Middle: shrimp chow mein (steamed veggies substituted for salad) Right: #1 combo (2 fish, 2 shrimp, veggies, rice and salad)
Hello Team Otani’s Tuesday! This week we are featuring our cook, Guadalupe! Guadalupe has been with us the longest and has been cooking up your favorite Otani’s dishes for over 25 years - she even created a few of them! Question: What is something you will never forget about working here at Otani’s? ... Guadalupe: Working with my sister, and my family coming in every Sunday to have lunch with me. Question: What is your favorite part about working here at Otani’s? Guadalupe: I love talking to the customers and the relationships I have with them. I also really like it when people tell me they enjoyed the food I made. Question: What is your favorite Otani’s menu item? Guadalupe: My favorites are the Salmon, Grilled Shrimp or Chicken Salad. Well... since the Teriyaki Chicken Salad is one of her creations, it’s only fitting it’s this week’s Lupe Special! Today and tomorrow, get a Lupe Special for only $8.49* *sorry, no substitutions. Tax not included. Valid on 9/29-9-30 from 11am-3pm.
We just wanted to take a moment to say Thank You!
