Dentures Types of dentures: 1) Conventional. This full removable denture is made and placed in your mouth after the remaining teeth are removed and tissues have healed, which may take several months. ... 2)Immediate. This removable denture is inserted on the same day that the remaining teeth are removed. Your dentist will take measurements and make models of your jaw during a preliminary visit. You don’t have to be without teeth during the healing period, but may need to have the denture relined or remade after your jaw has healed. 3) Over-denture. Sometimes some of your teeth can be saved to preserve your jawbone and provide stability and support for the denture. An over-denture fits over a small number of remaining natural teeth after they have been prepared by your dentist. Implants can serve the same function, too. New dentures may feel awkward for a few weeks until you become accustomed to them. The dentures may feel loose while the muscles of your cheek and tongue learn to keep them in place. It is not unusual to experience minor irritation or soreness. You may find that saliva flow temporarily increases. As your mouth becomes accustomed to the dentures, these problems should go away. Like your teeth, your dentures should be brushed daily to remove food particles and plaque. Brushing also can help keep the teeth from staining. *Rinse your dentures before brushing to remove any loose food or debris. *Use a soft bristle toothbrush and a non-abrasive cleanser to gently brush all the surfaces of the dentures so they don't get scratched. *When brushing, clean your mouth thoroughly including your gums, cheeks, roof of your mouth and tongue to remove any plaque. This can help reduce the risk of oral irritation and bad breath. *When you’re not wearing your dentures, put them in a safe place covered in water to keep them from warping.

Sensitive Teeth Is the taste of ice cream or a sip of hot coffee sometimes a painful experience for you? Does brushing or flossing make you wince occasionally? If so, you may have sensitive teeth. Possible causes include:... *Tooth decay (cavities) *Fractured teeth *Worn fillings *Gum disease *Worn tooth enamel *Exposed tooth root Sensitive teeth can be treated. The type of treatment will depend on what is causing the sensitivity. Your dentist may suggest one of a variety of treatments: *Desensitizing toothpaste. This contains compounds that help block transmission of sensation from the tooth surface to the nerve, and usually requires several applications before the sensitivity is reduced. *Fluoride gel. An in-office technique which strengthens tooth enamel and reduces the transmission of sensations. A crown, inlay or bonding. These may be used to correct a flaw or decay that results in sensitivity. *Surgical gum graft. If gum tissue has been lost from the root, this will protect the root and reduce sensitivity. *Root canal. If sensitivity is severe and persistent and cannot be treated by other means, your dentist may recommend this treatment to eliminate the problem.

Some of us wonder do we HAVE to get them pulled? Well... With age comes wisdom. Specifically, wisdom teeth. Room to Grow? Wisdom teeth can lead to problems if there isn’t enough space for them to surface or they come through in the wrong position. If your dentist says your wisdom teeth are impacted, he or she means they are trapped in your jaw or under your gums.... 1) Wisdom teeth that aren’t in the right position can allow food to become trapped. That gives cavity-causing bacteria a place to grow. 2) Wisdom teeth that haven’t come in properly, which can make it difficult to floss between the wisdom teeth and the molars next to them. 3) Wisdom teeth that have partially come through can give bacteria a place to enter the gums and create a place for infection to occur. This may also lead to pain, swelling and stiffness in your jaw. 4) Wisdom teeth that don’t have room to come through are thought by some to crowd or damage neighboring teeth. 5) A wisdom tooth that is impacted can form a cyst on or near the impacted tooth. This could damage the roots of nearby teeth or destroy the bone that supports your teeth. Why You Might Need to Have Your Wisdom Teeth Removed? Wisdom teeth may need to be removed when there is evidence of changes in the mouth such as: *Pain *Infection *Cysts *Tumors *Damage to neighboring teeth *Gum disease *Tooth decay (if it is not possible or desirable to restore the tooth)

SUMMER IS HERE! A lot of us may have trips and vacations planned for this hot summer upon us. Here are some dental tips for traveling: ... 1) Make Time for a Checkup If you can, schedule your next regular visit before your trip. Have a thorough exam so we can spot any problems before they happen. You’ll have peace of mind, and your dentist will have the most up-to-date information on your teeth, including x-rays. 2)In Case of Emergency... As a patient, it’s hard to know the difference between something that needs to be treated right away and something that can wait until you get home. That's what we are here for! 3)Proper Toothbrush Transport Letting your toothbrush air dry is how you keep your toothbrush clean at home, but that’s not always possible on vacation. What’s a traveling toothbrush to do? Keeping your toothbrush clean and out of contact with other things is important. A bag keeps your toothbrush separate from everything else in your luggage. When you get there, pop it open and let your brush air dry. 4)Pack an ADA-Accepted Pack of Gum Chewing sugarless gum can help relieve ear pressure during a flight and help keep cavities at bay on vacay. Research shows that chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after a meal can help prevent cavities. That’s because it gets saliva flowing, which helps wash away cavity-causing bacteria. 5)When In Doubt, Brush with Bottled Water If you are in a country where the water supply is compromised or you’re on a wilderness adventure but aren’t sure how clean the stream is always use bottled water to brush. Don’t use the local water to brush your teeth that reduces your chances of getting sick. 6)Get Back on Track After Your Trip If you let brushing and flossing slide or indulged in too many sweets while away don’t beat yourself up. Just get back on your normal routine of brushing twice a day for two minutes and flossing when you get home.
