It is with great pleasure that we announce a new, fully-staged production of Jake Heggie’s chamber opera, "Three Decembers," featuring world-renowned mezzo-soprano Susan Graham and celebrated Opera San José Resident Artists Maya Kherani, Soprano and Efraín Solís, baritone, offered via on-demand streaming beginning December 3! Determined to support artists and to continue presenting opera during these unprecedented times, General Director Khori Dastoor assembled an outstanding... team, led by Resident Conductor Christopher James Ray, Resident Director Tara Branham, and pianists Veronika Agranov-Dafoe and Sunny Yoon, to create a safe performance space, operated under the strictest safety protocols, to achieve a world-class digital capture. With a brilliant, witty libretto by Gene Scheer and a soaring musical score by Jake Heggie, "Three Decembers" is a 90-minute fullhearted American opera about family the ones we are born into and those we create. I have always wanted to work on the Rückert lieder but it was a little daunting. I would think about all the amazing interpretations I’ve heard and always hoped I could make people feel the way I felt when I listened to them. Art song is one of my true passions and I’m so thrilled to be working on them here. - Resident Artist, mezzo-soprano Ashley Dixon Our Resident Artists are busier than ever, pitching ideas and workshopping thrilling new projects for our community to enjoy from the comfort of home. Though my family would have preferred a more traditional life trajectory, I went on to become the first woman in my family to graduate from college, intern at Steppenwolf Theatre, direct 14 world premieres of plays in 14 years, and eventually see an opera... It was Ernest Bloch’s Macbeth at Chicago Opera Theatre. It was deliciously weird, and I was enthralled. Petrarch’s poetry is a reminder that life can change in an instant and that there’s so much beauty in embracing that fully. With life changing so quickly now, it’s great to give ourselves permission to change with it, says Resident Artist, tenor Carlos Enrique Santelli. Watch Santelli and Head of Music Staff Veronika Agranov-Dafoe workshopping a poem by Francesco Petrarca, set to music by Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco.
