Under the administration of Afro-Mexican President Vicente Guerrero, slavery was abolished in 1829, meanwhile the U.S. abolished slavery in 1865. Africans fleeing British Colonial plantations, whom intermarried with Florida's native Seminole tribes, fled to Mexico founding "El Nacimiento." Today their music continues to echo the story of the struggle and legacy of the Black experience in the U.S.
