Old World Huntington Beach

Here’s our 2nd week of #astheoldworldturns! Today we have Bern Bischof son of Josef & Dolores Bischof. Bernie was born in 1959 in Los Angeles, CA & lived his childhood years in Inglewood, CA (ingleWOOD) & attended Inglewood High School class of ‘77. Bernie was raised spending lots of time in the Alpine Village & was even in a German Dance Group which danced at the Alpine Village. He was extremely close to his grandmother, Elly, who lived to be 103 years old. & was an avi...d soccer player in his youth. He later helped his parents build Old World Village in HB. Bernie spent a lot of time learning the Gastronomie (hospitality) business by going to Germany & Austria. He even helped open & manage the 1st Mexican Restaurant (Joe Penez) located in Wurzburg, Germany (his father’s hometown). He has been running the Old World for the past 40 years & overseeing management. He met his beautiful wife, Barbara Doerfler, one time in Austria at a Volksfest. Bernie had given her his number & told her if she ever wanted to come to the USA to give him a call. It only took a couple years & she gave him a call & came over for 3 weeks. The day before she parted back to Austria, Bernie proposed to her & they had a fairytale wedding months later in a castle in Austria. They have 2 healthy boys, Markus and Matthaeus, & lived a wonderful life traveling back and forth to Austria annually & working side by side for nearly 20 years. Sadly, Barbara lost her battle of breast cancer at the young age of 47. This shook the very core of the family & business & she is missed daily. Bernie, who was trying to keep his head high for his boys, endured many hardships these past years & last year suffered being in an explosion & having over 43% of his body burned. With the outpouring of public love, prayers & family next to his side, Bernie still puts a smile on his face and tries his best to be the family rock. We are grateful he is alive & prayers are always welcome to help him ease back in to life. In his spare time, Bernie enjoys traveling, skiing and enjoying good company of friends and family.

Mama Rita has been busy in the kitchen! This weekend we have our chicken paprika’s here served with a potato dumpling. Chicken paprikash is a Hungarian dish that dates back several centuries. It gets its name from the ample use of paprika in the sauce. Paprika was imported into Hungary from Turkey & has been growing in southern Hungary for 500 years. Mama Rita’s chicken paprikash is just perfect because she’s from Hungary! She makes her dish with chicken, red & green bell pe...pper, onion, garlic & sour cream slowly simmered in her sauce.
