For our final #peermentormonday of the semester, we would like to introduce Senior Tashi Rosenthal, a Neuroscience Major. Tashi studied abroad in Spring 2020 and participated in the IES Abroad European Union (Freiburg) program. Here’s what Tashi had to say about her experience abroad: What was your favorite food or meal while abroad? My favorite "meal" was an almond croissant accompanied by a flat white with oat milk from a local cafe called cafe marcel.... What was your favorite place you visited in your host country? The Fasnacht Festival in Freiburg. What was your favorite class? Social Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation in Europe, great project-based course which allowed us to approach a social issue in Europe. What did you learn about yourself while studying abroad? I was able to connect to my Eastern European Jewish Heritage and understand that my sarcastic sense of humor is not appreciated in all countries. What is one fun fact about your time abroad? Although my host country was Germany, the program I participated in allowed me to travel on many occasions, in total I visited 7 countries and would have visited at least 2 more had we not been sent home early! Tashi’s Virtual Office Hours this fall are Wednesday 2:00-5:00 p.m. (PDT) and Thursday 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. (PDT) #pomonaabroad

This #peermentormonday, we would like to introduce Senior Lindsay Chu, a History Major with a concentration in East Asia. Lindsay Studied abroad in Spring 2020 and participated in the Associated Kyoto Program. Here’s what Lindsay had to say about her experience abroad: What was your favorite food or meal while abroad? There are so many amazing meals I had while I was in Kyoto, it really is impossible to say what my favorite meal was! But I have to say, the dish I think abou...t the most is the bowl of tonkotsu ramen I got after class one day at a nearby ramen-ya. The noodles were homemade, but what made the dish so memorable was the in-house broth, which had such a depth of flavor and the perfect level of richness without being overwhelming. It was possibly the best ramen I have ever had. What was your favorite place you visited in your host country? Kyoto is a beautiful city with hidden pockets of wonder everywhere you look. I have to say though, my favorite place I visited in Kyoto was Arashiyama, in the western corner of the city. Even though Arashiyama is very popular with tourists, it still leaves you a sense of awe. In Arashiyama, I walked through the more touristy bamboo groves to dozens of temples and shrines, each with their own personality and history. One temple was on a steep hill had a spectacular view of Kyoto, and another had thousands of moss-covered stone statues, each with their own quirky disposition. One shrine was dedicated to solely to hair! In Arashiyama, it seemed that anywhere you turned, there was something amazing waiting for you. What was your favorite class? My favorite class was Japanese Language. I loved my professor, and my Japanese improved so much! What did you learn about yourself while studying abroad? I learned that I really love discovering and exploring new places, but in order to get the most out of an experience, sometimes you have to put yourself outside of your comfort zone. I found that allowing myself to make mistakes was very helpful, and that asking questions when I needed was not something to be ashamed about! What is one fun fact about your time abroad? I lived with a host family while I was in Kyoto. However, unlike most host parents, who are older, my host parents were rather young and had a five-year-old and an eight-year-old, so I had two little brothers when I was abroad! Her virtual office hours this fall are Monday 9:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. (PDT) and Friday 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. (PDT) #pomonaabroad
