On December 1st, 2020 park staff counted 182 overwintering monarchs at the Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove. This is a significant decrease from last season when we had 6,736 monarchs, and a dramatic decrease from 5 years ago when we had 31,000 butterflies overwintering in the grove. Official counts are taken at all California monarch overwintering sites around the Thanksgiving holiday, therefore called the Western Monarch Thanksgiving Count. This data is used t...o study the population changes over time. For more information on the Western Monarch Thanksgiving Count, please visit https://www.westernmonarchcount.org/. Scientists have been studying the western monarchs and their decline. To learn more, check out this story from the The Xerces Society : https://xerces.org//monarch-population-in-california-spira. Historically, monarchs overwinter at the grove November through mid-February. If you plan to visit the grove, we kindly remind visitors to continue to slow the spread of the virus by staying local, planning ahead, wearing face coverings and maintaining the required physical distance from people outside your immediate household. We hope you enjoy exploring the park! #PismoStateBeach #WesternMonarchs #PismoButterflyGrove #MonarchButterfly #pismostatebeachbutterflygrove
The California coast is experiencing the highest tides of the year, commonly referred to as King Tides or Perigean-Spring Tides. This phenomenon exists when 3 factors are met: 1 The earth is at its closest point to the sun 2 The moon is at its closest to the earth ... 3 All three bodies (sun, moon, earth) are aligned producing either a full or new moon Remember to ALWAYS check the tides before you plan your beach and dune adventures. Tide charts can be found online and posted at the beach entry kiosks. The timing of the tides changes daily. Here are the upcoming high tides for our local region: Sunday December 13th: 8:02 AM 6.91 ft Monday December 14th: 8:43 AM 6.99 ft Tuesday December 15th: 9:26 AM 6.88 ft For more info on King Tides and to learn how scientists are using these King Tide events to study the future impacts of sea level rise, check out California King Tides and tune in for a special Facebook live with California State Parks on Monday. #KingTides #CAKingTides #Tides #KnowBeforeYouGo #OceanoDunes #OceanoDunesSVRA #PismoStateBeach #castateparks California State Parks PORTS Distance Learning Program
