In times of distress, people naturally seek ways to feel better. This looks very different for each person and what works for one may not work for someone else. Social media can be a great source of humor, inspiration, and connection. Many are sharing how they make the most of their safer-at-home time with starting new or forgotten projects, revamping their homes, or getting fit. While these are great ideas, for some seeing their feeds filled with people maximizing their prod...uctivity can also be discouraging, bringing up emotions of guilt and shame. Our society has been moving at this fast pace, ever growing, producing, and achieving. Since COVID-19, our modern society has been forced to stop and slow down. For the first time we see pollution down and our natural world peek out from under the industrial smog. As people collectively slow, we see our planet begin to heal. There is a parallel here within our own lives. For many, life is about trying to achieve happiness. This is often sought out through approval from others, promotion at work, having the newest things and experiencing the latest fad. What most don't realize is that true happiness and bliss comes from within. When you put that energy into yourself, you realize what you truly want in life, you set healthy boundaries, you can take in and accept difficulty without offense, you enjoy time with yourself and appreciate life as it is now, not how it might be in the future when you get that promotion or when you find that right person. When we only focus on what could be, we fatigue our bodies, our planet. We cannot sustain a successful life when our minds are disconnected from our bodies. So, if you are feeling the pressure to make the most out of your safer-at-home time, know that there is more to life than our external achievements. Rest, breathe, notice what you do have in the present moment. When you begin to see what you have, and stop dwelling on what you don't, you find the bliss in each moment. See more
As we head into the second month of social distancing and staying at home, many are facing hard times and difficult emotions. There is uncertainty about how this will impact our families, friends, and livelihoods. If you are feeling this way, you are not alone. We are creatures of routine and progress, but we are also resilient and adaptive. Even in the most darkest of times the light manages to shine through. If we search for it, it comes into focus. We notice the earth is a little cleaner, people are connecting with their families more, and there is new importance placed on real social relationships. If we look only for the darkness, we stay in the dimmed space of fear. When we look up, we can see the future and find hope.
We know how hard it can be to stay isolated from others, especially when there is no clear end in sight. We are collectively experiencing a change to our lives as we knew it, yet our own personal experience can be so varied. Emotional well-being isn't something we achieve and move on from. It is something we have to tend and maintain.
