#Repost @mayoroneill Bill Walsh revolutionized the way football was played. He created an offensive style called West Coast football, which led to incredible success at Stanford and the 49ers. His teams dominated the NFL in the 80s and coaches that coached under him dominated football well into the 90s. He used to tell players that when a zebra is finally entrapped by a lion, it submits to the inevitable its head drops, its eyes glaze over, and it stands motionless and... accepts its fate. Walsh said that the same posture is often visible as players leave the field in the later stages of the game when things are going against them. Walsh would tell his players: Even in the most impossible situations, stand tall, keep our heads up, shoulders back, keep moving, running, looking up, demonstrating our pride, dignity, and defiance. I don’t know about you, but it’s feeling a little like the late stages of a hard-fought football game lately. I’m seeing and hearing the strain in voices of friends, colleagues, and neighbors. Anyone know friends who have been divorced during COVID? I do. Anyone know folks scared for their kids’ mental well-being? I do. Anyone know people who have lost their jobs and don’t know how to make rent? I do. Anyone know families who lost loved ones and couldn’t give a proper send-off this year? I do. And yet, there’s hope. We’re seeing COVID positivity rates and hospitalization plummeting. We’re seeing houses of worship reopening often creatively and outdoors. We’re seeing people rally around our individual police and fire personnel who deserve the praise. People genuinely care about one another, more than I’ve seen in a while. More people are paying increasing attention to their overall physical health. And when you’re discussing health, include your mental health. Look, sometimes it’s too much for us as individuals. If you’re there, then know that people are here to help. Because when herds stay together, lions can’t run us down. We keep our heads up, our shoulders back, and see through clear eyes. We’re a community. We’re stronger together. Thank you @bkschuler for today’s pic!
