...And one of the colors of spring is redSan Diego Red Bougainvillea, and Bloodgood red Japanese Maple.

As we all know, the 2020 bonsai show season is all but gone, leaving us with beautiful trees in our yards that would have been there. So I decided to share a few photos of what would have been.

Now for something completely different...

Melaleuca next stage. It has already filled the small air layer pot with roots, so now we go to a bigger pot. By next spring it will have filled out the bigger pot and we can sever and slip pot it into a larger training pot.

I do not recall whether I started the air layer on this Melaleuca two or three years ago. Someone told me that if I severed the cambium all the way around I would kill it. That turned out to be wrong. In year one, it started to root, then healed across. In year two, I cleaned it all the way around, and this spring I found two small roots. This summer they filled the sphagnum, and now they are reaching the walls of the pot full of akadama mix. I am going to change to a bigger pot soon, and next spring I will sever it, put it in a training pot, and really start styling.

This maple was getting pot-bound after only a few months so I slip potted it into a larger pot as part of a demonstration.
