Ocean Beach Town Council 02.07.2021

On June 17th, please join us in honoring Dave Martin whose thoughtful and outspoken volunteerism accomplished so much to benefit the Peninsula community. Dave participated in a great many local projects throughout his life, but sadly passed away before being able to shepherd one of his most personally meaningful projects to fruition - The Ocean Beach Veterans Plaza. In memory and appreciation of Dave, local businesses have come together to support his vision for a beautiful oceanfront monument to those who have served their country.

The OBTC will be hosting a Make Your Voice Heard: Town Hall to Decide the Future of Ocean Beach Pier at our next public meeting on May 26th to discuss the City's long-term plans for our Ocean Beach Pier. We will be inviting our Local, State and Federal representatives to attend and the Town Hall format will allow YOU to weigh-in directly with your questions and concerns on this important topic. In advance of the meeting, we would like to send out a survey to gather your opi...nions about the pier. You will need to be a member of the Ocean Beach Town Council in order to actively participate in the town hall meeting. MEMBERSHIP IS FREE, and you can easily sign up for membership by going to our website and filling a simple form (https://obtowncouncil.org/membership/) or adding your contact info on the survey to join. We will be sending a link to the survey out on May 15th on socials and via email to all OBTC members. We look forward to gathering your opinions and having a fruitful conversation on the 26th. Get involved, be heard, and let’s find a positive path forward for our beloved pier! (Photo by: Jim Grant)

We had a fantastic town hall style town council meeting last night with both Mayor Todd Gloria and City Council President Jen Campbell in attendance for portions and plenty of excellent feedback and commentary from YOU the people of 92107 about the pier and its future. Biggest thanks to Ralph Teyssier for a fascinating history and comprehensive review of possibilities for the pier going forward. His comments about making the design process with the city going forward open, cr...eative, and interdisciplinary were well received. Below are the results of our survey - we have 427 responses, and people were allowed to select multiple options. We highlighted the three paths forward outlined in the 2019 report on the pier, and then offered a "other" option for people to specifically offer other ideas. 9 of the 14 "other" responses essentially wanted the pier torn down and not replaced. Thanks again for everyone's involvement in this interactive town hall format. When we make our voices heard, government is able to react with our true needs and wants in mind. Let's keep it up!

Word about the pier via Jenn Campbell's office: The City of San Diego will reopen the Ocean Beach Pier after repairs are completed. City engineers say a portion of the pier can safely reopen after railing and other parts of the pier are fixed. I am grateful that a large portion of the Ocean Beach Pier can be safely reopened for the enjoyment of residents and visitors. Much more work will need to be done to address the damage to other parts of the pier and find a long-term so...lution moving forward, said Council President Jennifer Campbell. A specific timeline for the reopening cannot be guaranteed but engineers believe it could open by summer. When it reopens the following restrictions will be implemented: - The part of the pier beyond the Café but before the expansion joint will remain closed for safety reasons - No vehicle traffic will be allowed on the pier except emergency vehicles and only when necessary - The pier will close during very high tides Council President Campbell’s Office is working with Mayor Todd Gloria's team, the engineering department, as well as local leaders and community groups to make sure future proposals are aligned with the community’s interests. Those details are still to be developed and meetings with community groups are being planned now. The OB Pier is a beloved local landmark that we want to maintain and keep safe for future generations of San Diegans and visitors to enjoy. My staff and I will be working closely with Council President Campbell and the community to find the best path forward, said Mayor Todd Gloria. Future construction of the pier will likely include modern materials at higher elevations to withstand potential sea level rise and the effects of climate change. The Ocean Beach Pier is a treasure to our community and has served the city for over 50 years and I am determined to look at all options with members of this community to plot out what the next 50 years will look like. said Council President Campbell

The city has put together a helpful toolkit to help city residents and organizations navigate the application process for murals within the public right-away. A public right-away mural could be like a crosswalk or intersection. The city requires that any artwork proposed for property owned by the city, under the jurisdiction of the city or both, be reviewed by the Commission for Arts and Culture and be approved by the city but they are now using the placemaking application pr...ocesses to make the process more streamlined. If you are interested in proposing a mural for City property or the public right-of-way, please review the mural application process and toolkit to get started. https://www.sandiego.gov//default/files/mural_toolkit_fill Celebrate art from local youth participants and take a tour of "Young Art 2021: My World, Our Planet". Through a partnership between San Diego Museum of Art, SDG&E, and Mindful Murals, 25 utility boxes have been transformed with selected compositions, which can be viewed by visiting stops indicated on this map. https://www.sdmart.org/.../03/Young-Art-Map-FNL-OL-1.pdf If you’re a Twitter user, please follow @SDArtsComm to stay up to date with Commission funding announcements, deadlines, exciting news and projects.
