One day I got an idea, and I wasn’t entirely sure it would be possible. I wanted to shoot Upper Yosemite Fall with Half Dome in the background, and the Milky Wa...y up above them. It’s a composition I have shot many times but have always wondered what it would look like at night. If I were to shoot this, I thought the foreground would look best if it was lit up by moonlight, and then it hit me. What if I could shoot a foreground that has a moonbow, and then have the Milky Way across the top of the image? It seemed like a pipe dream. One half of this image requires a lot of moonlight, while the other requires the opposite. It was something my brain conjured and to be honest I didn’t think conditions would line up as good as they did. So I looked at where the moon would be on certain days and yesterday, Thursday night, seemed to line up almost perfectly. I asked my buddy Britain Andrew if he’d like to come along. I told him my idea of shooting a moonlit foreground, but there was a chance we might get to see the moonbow, he was suckered in instantly. We shot the foreground, then I found a tight spot between a couple boulders where I could rest for a little bit. I awoke 45 minutes later, it felt like something was calling me. I made my way over to my camera and looked down at Yosemite Fall. The moonbow! I yelled with excitement. I shot it once. Thought it looked cool, but I don’t think I realized how good it came out at that moment. I ran over and told Britain that the moonbow was there, hurry up and go get it! A photo that started as an idea. Well, they all usually do, but this one I honestly thought wouldn’t be possible. Thank you, Yosemite Gods, for showing me your magic yet again. I’m forever grateful.

On a cloudy spring morning in 2020, my dad and I headed out to Yosemite National Park in search of great gray owls. Upon arriving at the meadow, we found a grea...t gray owl perched at the forest edge. As my dad and I watched this owl hunting in the meadow, we hoped she would dive into one of the few patches of wildflowers in the meadow. We couldn’t believe our luck when she dove not once, but twice into the flowers, giving us many photo opportunities, After a few hunting attempts, the owl successfully caught a vole and ate it. Yosemite National Park will remain closed at least until Saturday, January 30, 2021, conditions permitting. Park staff continue to clear roads and trails, mitig...ate hazard trees, and work toward restoring safe conditions for employees and visitors due to last week's Mono wind event. A significant winter storm is forecast to begin Tuesday night. Hazardous conditions, including substantial snow accumulation, falling trees, and dangerous road conditions, are anticipated through the week. When the park reopens, it will be open 24 hours per day. Upper Pines Campground will open on February 8. Yosemite Valley Lodge and The Ahwahnee will open on February 5. Visitors will be able to enter the park using El Portal Road (Highway 140), Big Oak Flat Road (Highway 120 from the west), and Hetch Hetchy Road. Areas south of Yosemite Valley (including Badger Pass, Wawona, Mariposa Grove, South Entrance, and Wawona Road) will remain closed until further notice.
