Hi everyone...Sorry for the late notice...I'm in Montana and have very little cell service...There is a monthly meeting tonight at Fillippi's Pizza in Poway...Start time is 6:00 pm...Have fun...Lots of seasons right around the corner. .

This springs recruitment seems to be outstanding...Poults almost as big as their moms are being seen in many locations...I think we're well on our way to recovering from the drought years. .

For all the guys and gals that got drawn for Lake Sutherland hunts...The refund checks have been sent out...We at NWTF apologize again for late refund...Looking forward to next spring and the Spring Turkey Tune-Up.

Hi all, With great regret, the 2020 JAKES event has been canceled. As always, a huge thank you to Escondido Fish & Game Assoc. for offering another date, but we (BOD) felt logistically it would be impossible to accommodate over a 150 people in the heat of August. Stay safe everyone and we’ll have the event again in 2021....Steve

All sorts of rumors are circulating that Sutherland is going to close for good for hunting and fishing. El cap is going to shut down all water contact. If you fish or like to hunt turkeys at Sutherland you might want to voice your opinion. The person to contact for this would be BRYAN NORRIS , he is the lakes program manager. Hunted with my daughter Stefanie this morning...Little slow, but then we had a hen start yelping back to the Flydown slate...She made her way right to us...And when I say right to us, I mean right to us...10' and she's yelping like crazy...Paying no mind to the 3 DSD's down below her...After about 15 minutes of this, I hear a drum, then a strut...1st comes another hen, then 2 longs...The 2 hens join up, but the 2 toms go after the jake...Unfortunately, they are really close t...ogether and she can't shoot...Then the hens start taking them away from the jake and now they're 40+...Stef says, "do something, they're getting away"...I yelp on the diaphragm and they turn and gobble...It was his last one....18-2, 10" beard, 1/2 spurs....Solid 2 year old....ps...Did I mention I missed the 2nd one with my little .410...Should've just used her gun again...lol .

Jacob & I knew we didn't have a lot of time this morning...We also knew that Julian was pretty much fogged in, wet, and cold...So, we decided on a spot that I had not shot a turkey before, but I knew they were there. The spot we hunted was not near the roost, but I had watched these birds for a couple of years now...When they lose their hens they like to gobble high on the mountain...We set-up halfway up...Nothing for about an hour, then we got our 1st hit on a Flydown slate......In minutes, he was on us and eyeballing the decoys (breeding hen & jake)...This boy liked to gobble and he had a strong one...But the grass was wet and we just couldn't see a beard (the grass was high too)...He hung around at 35-45 yds for at least 45 minutes...Then we could see he was changing his posture and head color (red to white)...Sure enough, he had company...1st saw the two white heads coming to him from his right...Then they started chasing him around...To the right of them was a single hen...As soon as the jake got scared off, they saw the decoys...And they lit up for another fight...Instead of a fight, they found a twenty & a twelve with TSS #9's...And down they go on 3. Jacob's bird was a big boy...22-1 lbs, 9 1/2" beard, 1" hooks....My bird weighed 18-6, 10 1/2" beard, 1 " spurs. Happy Easter everyone. .

Great opener for Stefanie, Jacob, and I...Had some jakes come in in the morning, but by 8:30 am, it was dead...We had brought our dogs with us to the Lake Henshaw cabin...So, we went back and let them out...We headed back to the Julian mountains at about 11:00 am...At about 12:00 pm, we got gobbles from behind us...After about 15 minutes of soft calling, we had them walking down to the Dave Smith decoys...One walks by, then a 2nd, then a 3rd longbeard, and they all head for t...he jake decoy...After they pass only 5 yds from us, Stefanie puts her Benelli 20 gauge up with a custom TSS load...As the biggest of the 3 clears the other 2, she lets loose...Down he goes!...Almost at the same time, Jacob smacks the one next to him...The 3rd bird jumps in the air and just starts to walk off...Stefanie gives me her gun (since I was just calling), and I knock down #3...What an exciting hunt and a great way to start the season! Stefanie's bird was a monster...25-8 lbs, 10 1/2" beard, and 1 1/2" spurs...Heaviest turkey I've ever weighed. .
