We have an exciting update at Nutrition Instincts! I'm thrilled to share that our Associate RD, Maddie White is now a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES - previously CDE)! This certification requires a minimum of 2,000 hours of diabetes education with clients, 30 hours of continuing education, and a rigorous exam. Individuals with Type 1 Diabetes have 2.4x greater risk of developing an eating disorder than the general population (Jones et al. 2000). The o...verall prevalence of eating disorders in clinical samples of patients with Type 2 Diabetes are from 12-40% (Garcia- Mayor, 2016). Furthermore, those who seek care for diabetes are often provided with education that may trigger or exacerbate disordered eating habits. We know it's incredibly important to have providers who understand the intersection of diabetes and disordered eating and are able to provide support for blood sugar management that not only mitigates the potential for disordered eating but can benefit the relationship with food and body. We're thrilled that Maddie will continue offering these services at Nutrition Instincts with the added expertise that her new credential provides. For those of you who work with the pregnant population, services also include those for gestational diabetes. If you'd like to learn more about Maddie and why she pursued this certification, click this link to read her interview: https://nutritioninstincts.com/interview-with-maddie-white/ As a reminder, we are in-network with Health Net and have seen most plans provide stellar coverage to our clients. We also offer sliding scale spots for those in need and superbills.

Hey Mama! Like many of you, my home life has changed a lot this year and especially this fall (whoa, did you know it was fall?!). With everything going on what we do NOT need is to be stressed out about our relationship with food. Feeling like we're on a constant roller coaster with eating is something a lot of moms experience and although I don't want to add to your to-do list, I do just want to let you know that I have a completely FREE course to help. This mini-audio cours...e is for you if... You're tired of feeling like food kinda runs the show. You're "good" all day only to find yourself mindlessly downing your child's leftover goldfish by the time 2:00 pm rolls around. You get so busy with work or mommin' it up that you regularly forget to eat. You're still stressing over the cookie you ate with your child yesterday. You're tired of investing in diets and wellness plans that seem to all lead to the same place - you're ready for something different. The Busy Mom's Starter Guide to Making Peace with Food will help you start to tune into your thoughts, emotions and physical experiences around motherhood and food. Sign up for it here and check out my other free resources while you're at it! https://www.intuitiveeatingmoms.com/free-gifts/ #nutritioninstincts #postpartumwellness #postpartumjourney #intuitiveeatingmoms #selflove #selfcare #wellness #registereddietitian #nutrition #dietitiansofinstagram #maternalmentalhealth #newmomtips #recoveryafterbirth #motherhoodiscomplicated #ilearnedthehardway #thisispostpartum #fourthtrimester #newmamalife #momselfcare #momworries #motherhoodquotes #momsupportingmoms

Hey mama, even if you've done this baby thing before, you're STILL going to run into things you weren't expecting or don't know. But if you've done this before, you already knew that ;-). My best advice is to research and line up postpartum professionals to reach out to BEFORE you give birth. It doesn't mean you'll need them all but it's nice to know what resources you have available should you need them. My recommendations? A certified lactation counselor(IBCLC), registered ...dietitian, postpartum doula, sleep consultant, postpartum therapist, nanny/daycare, and pelvic floor therapist. Check your insurance if you have it to see what/who might be covered. Check local community programs. If you're in the US and qualify, definitely get set up with your local WIC clinic! Are there any that you would add to the list? #nutritioninstincts #postpartum #postpartumwellness #postpartumjourney #intuitiveeatingmoms #selflove #wellness #maternalmentalhealth #newmomtips #recoveryafterbirth #registereddietitian #therapist #lactationcounselor #doula #sleep #pelvicfloor #sleepconsultant

How can I love this body when it doesn't feel like "me?". A very common and unfortunately all too often unspoken question so many of us have. The first thing I want you to know is that your relationship with your body does not have to be perfect every day. Or perfect at all! Like everything in our lives it will change, sometimes even daily. But the one thing that won't change is that body WILL BE your home. Some of my favorite tips for working towards a loving relationship wi...th your home are below. I would LOVE to hear if you have any others!! Validate - it IS hard to be in a body that does not feel familiar - particularly when that body is not embraced or appreciated by society Re-establish the relationship, get to know it - spend time living IN this body - be in nature, walk barefoot, hold your child Give yourself time - you may find that a co-exist agreement with your body is all that feels accessible. That's simply an agreement to co-exist with your body. Show it respect but not pressure yourself to fall in love with it Something that is important to note about body image is that it's constantly shifting. What about the moments that do feel familiar? Even we're feeling physically feeling very different, you may find familiarity when LIVING in your body while doing activities that align with your values, feel important to your identity or just feel familiar. Negative body thoughts may spike when you're struggling with being stuck at home with your [adorable] newborn and not quite sure of yourself yet. But perhaps you don't think much about your body while out with good friends or while at work. There's no right or wrong way. Just start to get curious about how your perception of your body shifts as you navigate life! #nutritioninstincts #postpartum #postpartumwellness #postpartumjourney #intuitiveeatingmoms #selflove #wellness #maternalmentalhealth #newmomtips #recoveryafterbirth #nutritioninstincts #postpartum #postpartumwellness #postpartumjourney #intuitiveeatingmoms #selflove #wellness #maternalmentalhealth #newmomtips #recoveryafterbirth

For over ten years, I have had the privilege of sharing sacred spaces with mothers. I've sat across from many of them, of all ages and backgrounds, tears in their eyes, pleading with me to help them not pass their food and body "stuff" down to their children. If you've ever had any of those thoughts, this is what I want you to know Stop beating yourself up about your own poor body image and food struggles. Diet culture has been around much longer than you and there is no p...erfect roadmap to food and body healing. All anyone needs to focus on is taking the next step. You can't keep your child from having an eating disorder. I know that can sound scary, but there are many factors that contribute to the development of an eating disorder including genetics, certain personality traits, and trauma. You CAN decrease the risk and you CAN increase protective factors. More on that later. Controlling your child's weight will not keep them from challenges with food and their body. In fact, it can actually increase the risk that your child may develop disordered eating. It reinforces the message that their body is not ok and that they are less worthy of food, enjoyment of food, and responding to their hunger, just to name a few. You're already changing the body love narrative. The moment you began to explore the idea of passing down a different story to your children, the legacy of food and body suffering began to crumble. You don't have to have this all figured out, you just have to be present and willing to try. #nutritioninstincts #intuitiveeatingmomsclub #intuitiveeating #ie #haes #antidiet #dietitiansofinstagram #antidietrd #rdsofinstagram #allfoodsfit #bodypositivity #edrecovery #bodyimage #stoptheshame #bodyacceptance #feedingstrategies #selfcare

I am so excited to share with you a new podcast launching this month called "Demystifying Diversity"! Many of us have been recognizing and confronting how much more we have to learn about creating a truly inclusive world and learning about the lived experiences of others. I'm thankful that co-hosts AnnaMarie Jones and Daralyse Lyons reached out to share about their show and will be providing an opportunity for all of us to learn! Check out what the hosts have to say about the...ir upcoming podcast: "What if you had the opportunity to hear compelling firsthand accounts about the often life-or-death stakes of unchecked biases and bigotry? Would you listen? Biracial journalist Daralyse Lyons has interviewed more than 100 people academics, politicians, thought-leaders, advocates, activists, and even an incarcerated inmate for an in-depth exploration of a wide range of topics related to diversity, equity and inclusion. Every other week, for ten weeks, she'll invite you to join her to learn more about a topic related to diversity. This podcast encourages listener participation, so, on alternating weeks, Daralyse and her co-collaborator AnnaMarie Jones will host a Q&A episode in which they answer listeners questions, share about the interview and podcast compilation process, and delve more deeply into each topic. They are excited to partner with you to demystify diversity." Before choosing a provider for feeding therapy, it’s so important to do your homework. Do a minimum of 3 consults. Look for responsiveness and respect for your child and their needs in the approach. If a child is forced, coerced or ignored into doing whatever the provider thinks they are supposed to do with food, keep looking!!! And follow Extreme Picky Eating Help and Grace Wong RD MSc to learn more about what to look for in a center or provider!!
