Over a million died and as many t...ook ship and left, most going to the US but many to Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Afterwards, until about 1950, another million Irish emigrated to the US. This Census Bureau demographics chart shows that 11% of the US population claim Irish ancestry, with a strong concentration centered on New York and Boston where so many ships full of refugees docked.
