Through our presentation we have taught our tamari’i that throughout their life’s journey they can always look for guidance from their ancestors who are all around them in nature...they just have to look, listen, have patience & be humble. We as Nonosina are guided & protected by the sacred white bird of Polynesia who led so many Va’a of our ancestors to new horizons in times long ago. We are reminded that we are not alone when the seas of life are rough or when our world seems as dark as the heavy storm clouds...our Nonosina bird is there to speak to us if we will listen & always guide us to safety if we will follow. We dedicate all of our group presentations in memory of: Estella Nonosina Reid, Voka Mataele, Le Afioga Launatausala Toilolo Edwin, Elaine Koanui, Alec Tekurio. #Repost @huratahiti #NONOSINA @nonosina1965 @tiana_nonosina TAMROA | TNE... Boy | Man It’s always exciting to see boys/men dance. As we know the ratio of girls to boys in dance is always in favor of the girls. Let’s show some love to our Nonosina boys as we have entered 18 boys in solos, of which two of them are exhibition since they are only 4 years old. Most of our boys were first time competitors but we have a lot of little ones in training to start competing soon! Did you know... In ancient Polynesia it was the males that did majority of the dancing? Most times it was the warriors who created movement that mimicked nature, warfare & procreation for various reasons including maintenance of physical strength & stamina, to attract a lover and in some cases beyond their control, invoke a trance-like or possession state of being all through the art of DANCE. Polynesians also believe that there is MANA in our hair which is why you will see many Polynesian men & women with long hair or adorned with the hair of our ancestors as a part of our traditional regalia. Good luck to all the TAMROA/TNE entering Hura Tahiti this year! We love to see it #HaaTne ‘’ahu: Mhealani Mika ‘aut: Rana Sautia dancer: Izzy Sautia photo cred: Tiana Liufau

#WomensHistoryMonth Dr. Pualani Kanakaole Kanahele. All anyone has to say is Aunty Pua to Hawaiian practitioners and there is no doubt about who we are talking about. Aunty Pua was the president of the Edith Kanakaole Foundation (Hawaiian cultural-based non-profit 501(c)(3). EKF’s mission is to elevate Hawaiian intelligence through cultural education founded on the teachings and traditional practices of Edith and Luka Kanakaole (Aunty Puas parents). Now the foundatio...n is under the direction of her nephew Kuhao Zane. Aunty Pua, alongside her sister another prestigious figure in Hawaii (Nlani), both served as Kumu Hula to Hlau o Kekuhi of Hilo Hawaii. Hlau o Kekuhi is celebrated for its mastery of the aihaa style of hula (dance) and oli (chant). The aihaa is a low-postured, vigorous, bombastic style of hula that springs from the eruptive volcano persona Pele and Hiiaka, characteristic of Hawaii Islands creative forces. The hlau is currently led by Aunty Puas daughters Kekuhi & Huihui. #8generations Aunty Pua is one of the most renowned Kumu hula and Hawaiian scholar, loea or expert of Hawaiian practices, Living Treasure, activist, author, musician, film director, Merrie Monarch judge and more (yes, can you believe there could be more?!). Her knowledge and ancestral ties range from ethno astronomy to volcanism and she is reared in Hawaiian tradition, practice & perspective which has been key in helping elevate cultural knowledge and intelligence in Hawaii. Lets not forget that she was invited by the Dalai Lama to speak on the subject of world peace (2004), was a keynote speaker for the Western Association of Architects & was the Hawaii representative for the UNESCO advisory committee on native cultures & intellectual property rights (1999). From multiple Western scholastic accolades to her native intelligence Aunty Pua is our Hawaiian super woman and the epitome of a MANA WAHINE. Even today she continues to lead, research and serve her community. #GOAT - #TianaNonosina #DrPualaniKanakaoleKanahele #AuntyPua #EdithKanakaoleFoundation #HlauOKekuhi #Aihaa #Oli #Loea #LivingTreasure #ManaWahine #Hawaii #Hawaiian

#WomensHistoryMonth As an ori Tahiti teacher myself it is another MUST to feature the God mother of Tahitian dance: Madeleine Teroroheiarii Moua. Madeleine was born in 1899 (Gambier & from the Tamatoa lineage) and eventually set foot in Tahiti where she organized the first professional group of Tahiti in 1956 and named it HEIVA. This was a big deal considering music & dance was banned by the missionaries for nearly a century! Madeline traveled the world displaying the ...ori Tahiti & attracting visitors to come learn about her island home. Madeleine broke barriers & reclaimed Tahitian culture through the medium of music and dance. Some of the most famous group leaders, dancers & musicians from Tahiti have trained under the direction of Madeleine. Her method was simple, tap into the rhythm and heartbeat of nature and there you will find the ori Tahiti. Ori Tahiti might have been banned but it was never lost, mother nature will always be the key to our past & our ROOTS (literally). She was a director, entrepreneur, teacher for males & females, performer, costume designer, musician and a SHE BOSS! - Madeline, I make a point to teach all my dancers of your bravery & passion to bring back to the forefront the art of ori Tahiti. They know your name & always will I feel your presence when in the company of your descendants, Guy Laurens & Vaimiti Bourez. Mauruuru maitai! - Tiana N. #WomensHistoryMonth Its only right to feature my grandmother, the late Estella Nonosina Reid affectionately known as Gram. She ruled with an iron fist but lived with a heart of gold. Born in American Smoa (Faleniu) her journey led her to Southern California with only 2 things: dance & testimony. She learned how to speak English in exchange for dance lessons & she became an entrepreneur, dance teacher, performer, costume designer, musician and more. In all she does & ...for many years being based off island she would beam with pride at anything and anyone that represented Samoa in a positive light. Although her journey was not a positive one growing up in Samoa she always held the most special place in heart for her island home. Through it all, she has kept her testimony & faith in the teachings of her church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints). - Gram: you have paved the way for thousands & until my last breath I will tend to your legacy with the fist and heart that you raised me with.
