To highlight that Alvarado Elementary students are not in classroom studies, the organization known as Decreasing the Distance will hold a Zoom In on Tuesday, March 2, at the Noe Valley Town Square instead of on the Alvarado School campus. It’s set for 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Decreasing the District sponsors Zoom-In mornings during which public school children participate in their online class in front of their locked San Francisco Unified School District sites or in nearby San Fra...ncisco parks. Organization cofounder Meredith Willa Dodson said the event will make visible to the public what has gone largely invisible to many for 345 days now: students learning in an environment other than their classrooms. Are you the parent of a student at Alvarado elementary or James Lick middle, two schools on a list that SFUSD has scheduled to be renamed? Send me a text on FB Messenger (to Corrie Anders) if you oppose or support the renaming. Thanks.

3-14-20: Just received word from Upper Noe Rec Center it will suspend indoor programming and provide childcare for grades K through 5 for city workers and low-income families, starting Monday, March 16. The notice also says SF Public Library branches will offer childcare and meals for youth in grades 6-12. The outdoor park will stay open. Here's the scoop: Upper Noe Rec Center playground, field, exterior courts and dog run remain open during regular park hours but the buildin...g will be closed to the general public. You can monitor Rec & Park response to COVID-19 at https://sfrecpark.org/AlertCenter.aspx . SF Rec & Park announced yesterday: Effective at the close of business today, we will be suspending all regular indoor programming in our recreation centers and Department-operated clubhouses. Beginning Monday, March 16, 37 recreation sites around the city will operate as emergency child care facilities in the wake of public school closures and other safety measures the City is undertaking around COVID-19. The facilities will serve children of Department of Public Health staff; health care workers from San Francisco hospitals; city employees who have been activated as Disaster Service Workers; and low-income working families. Our facilities will serve grades K through 5, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., through March 31. Similarly, the San Francisco Public Library will cease regular operations of its branches and provide child care for youth, grades 6-12. The Office of Early Care and Education will continue to provide support and guidance for existing private childcare providers for children ages 0-5. The Department of Children, Youth and Their Families (DCYF) will be providing three meals a day for all children at these facilities. Detailed information on emergency youth care locations, eligibility and registration can be found at DCYF.org/care In addition to the suspension of regular recreation programming, Recreation and Parks is also closing all swimming pools and suspending all community meetings, volunteer events, indoor permits, and athletic field permits (including all games, practices, clinics, tournaments and any other activities that would cause individuals to gather in close proximity), effective March 14, through the end of the month. The Voice just received word that Odd Mondays on March 9 and Word Week 2020 on March 14-21 have been cancelled at the recommendation of the SF Department of Public Health. Here is the message from organizer Rick May: From: Richard May To: Richard May Sent: Sat, Mar 7, 2020 10:46 am... Subject: Canceling March 9 Odd Mondays and March 14-21 Word Week Late yesterday afternoon, I received notification that the San Francisco Department of Public Health had just recommended event organizers, for the next two weeks, consider canceling public gatherings with an expected significant attendance to help limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus and that people over 60 years of age or with compromised health not attend these gatherings in any case. After discussing this with Paula Foley of Folio Books, I decided to cancel the Odd Mondays scheduled for this Monday, March 9. I have notified the readers and the store. I’m very sorry it came to this, but public health is more important. Please be well. Odd Mondays will be back as soon as we can. Also, to those of you planning on attending Word Week 2020, Noe Valley’s annual literary festival, March 14-21, has also been cancelled since it falls within the two weeks specified by SF Public Health. I chair the committee of 10 people. We debated it considerably yesterday but, when the Public Health guidance came down, the decision was clear. Word Week will be back next year. Thank you all for understanding, Rick May
