Former French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing died on December 2nd at the age of 94. The cause of death was complications from the COVID-19 coronavirus. He served as President of France from May 1974 until May 1981. In his capacity as Minister of the Economy and Finance, Giscard d'Estaing attended the French-American conference held in Reykjavik, Iceland in late May 1973. During World War II, he was in the French Resistance and served in the French First Army. Following th...e war, he taught and was in civil service before entering politics in 1956. In 1975, he created the G6 (Group of Six) when he held a summit in Rambouillet, France with the government heads of West Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. His impact on international diplomacy endures with the ongoing annual meetings of the G8 group, which grew to include Canada and Russia. Following his presidency, he co-founded the AEI World Forum with former President Gerald Ford, former British Prime Minister James Callaghan, and former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt.
