[Español abajo] From June 1-10, pre-trial hearings in the Military Diary Case were held for six of twelve recently arrested former military and police officials. The Military Diary is a document that lists the names of 183 people who were captured and forcibly disappeared between 1983-1985 and provides evidence of the State’s systematic use of forced disappearance, torture, and extra-judicial killings against the civilian population. The accused are on trial for a variety o...f crimes, including forced disappearance, kidnapping, torture, murder, crimes against humanity, and sexual violence. The judge presiding over the case, Miguel Ángel Gálvez, indicted the six accused, ruled that they would remain in pre-trial detention during the process, and gave a three-month period for completing investigations before the start of the intermediate phase in mid-September. Another six people arrested in this case remain in detention in other cities or hospital facilities, awaiting their first declaration hearing. These hearings are an important step forward for attaining justice for the relatives and victims in the Military Diary Case. We stand in solidarity with those seeking truth and justice for their loved ones. Famdegua Guatemala Grupo De Apoyo Mutuo -GAM ~ ~ ~ Del 1 al 10 de junio, se llevaron a cabo audiencias de primera declaración en el caso del Diario Militar para seis de los doce ex-militares y policías recientemente arrestados. El Diario Militar es un documento que enumera los nombres de 183 personas que fueron capturadas y desaparecidas forzosamente entre 1983-1985 y evidencia el uso sistemático por parte del Estado de las desapariciones forzadas, torturas y ejecuciones extrajudiciales contra la población civil. Los imputados se juzgan por diversos delitos, entre ellos desaparición forzada, secuestro, tortura, asesinato, crímenes de lesa humanidad y violencia sexual. El juez que preside el caso, Miguel Ángel Gálvez, procesó a los seis imputados, dictó que permanecerán en prisión preventiva durante el proceso y dio un plazo de tres meses para finalizar las investigaciones antes del inicio de la etapa intermedia a mediados de septiembre. Otras seis personas detenidas en este caso permanecen detenidas en otras ciudades o instalaciones hospitalarias, a la espera de su audiencia de primera declaración. "Ixil Maya resistance against Megaprojects in Cotzal, Guatemala" November 6, 2020 12 pm PT (US and Canada) Abstract: Among the Ixil Maya of Guatemala, the arrival of mega projects is referred to as the new invasion. This presentation examines a movement in Cotzal against the construction of the Palo Viejo hydroelectric plant built by the Italian company Enel of the finca San Franciso from 2008-2012. The struggle was characterized by peaceful resistance, a four-month blockade, and the arrival of the military. I argue that the arrival of mega projects, such as Palo Viejo, continues the history of a colonial logic of extraction, and is an extension of the historical tensions between the Indigenous Peoples, the fincas, and the Guatemalan state. Bio: Dr. Batz is currently a 2020-2021 President’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Native American Studies at the University of California, Davis, where he is working on his manuscript tentatively entitles The Fourth Invasion: Decolonizing Histories, Megaprojects and Ixil Resistance in Guatemala. He began working on his book as a 2018-2019 Anne Ray Fellow at the School for Advanced Research in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Reminiscent of the prevention through deterrence strategy implemented by the US government since the 1990’s, the family separation policy was specifically constructed in order to deter migration by increasing human rights abuses at the border. Immigration policies in the United States have become increasingly inhumane in the last 30 years, but human rights abuses have quickly intensified under the Trump Administration. [English below] El 15 de octubre, el Parlamento Xinka anunció que se está llevando a cabo la etapa preparatoria para dar inicio al proceso de pre consulta. Esto muestra un avance después de un estancamiento de más de dos años. Esto se da después de que el MEM aceptara a 59 representantes elegidxs por el pueblo Xinka para participar en el proceso de la consulta según sus costumbres, lo cual determinará el destino de la minera Escobal. This was following the MEM’s acceptance of the 59 representatives chosen by the Xinka people to participate in the consultation process according to their customs, which will determine the fate of the Escobal mine.
