Level of blood pressure matters! If you’re hypertensive, taking medicine may help reduce the risk for Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The type of medicine used diuretics, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockers made no difference in lowering the risk according to recent research. ... #NHG #neuropsychology #dementia #alzheimers #cognitivehealth #cognitivehealthcare

We all know how good probiotics are for the gut but now research is showing the benefits for the brain, too! The gut has been called a second brain because it produces many of the same neurotransmitters as the brain does, such as serotonin and dopamine, which are involved in regulating mood. In fact, it is estimated that 90% of serotonin is made in the digestive track! Since what affects the gut can affect the brain, the research is pointing to how probiotics may help both mood and cognitive function. #NHG #neuropsychology #brainhealth #guthealth #cognitivehealth #cognitivehealthcare

A little bit of Friday humor and to encourage reading for fun! Besides being a great break from screens, reading for fun has numerous benefits for kids, such as: Associated with higher achievement in school across all curriculum, not only English! Exercises the brain to strengthen connections and build new ones. Reinforces focus and concentration to sit and read quietly.... Fosters curiosity and learning about the world around them. Builds stronger vocabulary and language skills. Expands a child’s imagination. Develops empathy and perspective-taking. Provides opportunity for family bonding time when everyone grabs their favorite book and meets on the sofa or bed! Encourage reading for fun beginning at a young age by: Visiting libraries or book stores and have the child select a book of their choosing. Even though tablets are now mostly used for reading, the tangible experience of thumbing through different books can create excitement and motivation! Setting modest, attainable reading goals (e.g., x number of pages per week). Blocking in a daily time of day dedicated to reading (e.g., before bedtime). Inquiring about the book’s plot or characters and what they find interesting to encourage verbal reasoning and expression and reading comprehension skills. Rewarding with another book they’d like to dive into! And of course, modeling the behavior you want to see by regularly reading your own books or newspapers, too! And for children with learning differences, audiobooks are a fantastic alternative to continue to reap the benefits of reading without the frustration or challenges that may occur! #reading #readings #reading_time #readinglife #readingchallenge #readingisfundamental #readingislife #readingaddict #readingisfun #readinggoals #readingrocks #readinglove #ilovereading #readingforfun #readingforpleasure #readingdisorder #dyslexia #audiobooks #booksontape #academicachievement #imagination #brainconnections #vocabulary #languageskills #attention #concentration #neuropsychology #neuropsychtesting #NHG See more

In today’s times we often find ourselves bound to our desks for hours on end. Research shows that prolonged sitting without moving can slow blood flow to the brain which may have brain health implications. Short-term drops in blood flow can temporarily cloud thinking (brain fog) and memory, while long-term declines are related to higher risks for some neurodegenerative diseases, including dementia.... Getting up and moving for just 2 minutes every half hour can restore this decreased blood flow. Some people even find that a treadmill desk improves their attention/focus thereby their overall productivity at work! And of course, keeping up with a regular exercise routine has excellent benefits for brain and body health! #brainhealth #brainfog #exercise #dementia #neurodegenerative #health #neuropsychology #NHG See more

It’s back to school which means the transition from long summer days to early bedtimes and wake ups can pose a challenge for parents and children! It is well known that poor or insufficient hours of sleep can affect a child’s school/academic achievement as well as their social functioning and behavior. So what can be done to optimize kids’ sleep? One important strategy is to remove all screens from the bedroom. This includes iPhones, iPads, televisions, and anyt...hing that emits bright lights which suppresses the secretion of melatonin which sends the brain signals to wake up. Regular bedtimes, consistent bedtime routines, and relaxation strategies have been shown to be effective for resolving sleep problems. A pre-bedtime quiet wind down period is also a great way to ease into bedtime after an active day. This is a prime opportunity to encourage reading for fun! Remember, children look to their parents to establish clear rules and routines, even if they seem to fight it! Parents should strive to set good sleep examples as children are always learning through observing. And, positive effects from resolving sleep problems occur not only for the child’s psychosocial functioning but for parents’ mental health too! #sleep #sleepwell #sleepbetter #parentcoaching #parenttraining #preschool #schoolage #backtoschool #bedtime #neuropsychology #neuropsychtesting #NHG See more
