GRAY FOX RESCUE!! We’re falling behind on our weekly wildlife roundups but eager to share this story with our friends. We were alerted to a situation where coyote pups were getting caught in a net at a sports facility batting cage. We arrived to find 3 gray fox kits (not coyote) completely tangled up, with netting wrapped around necks, torsos and limbs. We were told that this is the 4th or 5th time this has happened and that one of the babies had been there for 8 hours alr...eady. We went right to work cutting them out of the mess of netting. Two went right down into the storm drain where their den is and which the net was hanging over, thus them getting tangled in it. But the one who had been there longest was weak and dehydrated. On the advice of a licensed rehabber, we took her home to give her a night of rest, hydration and a good meal. She was strong by morning so we were happy to return her to her home and family. And at the same time, we installed a PVC pipe along the length of the batting cage where the storm drain is. Then tied the net to it securely so that there is no longer a bunch of excess to hang over the drain hole that the babies use as passage to and from their home. A very simple solution that will prevent future stranding, sufferings and even death. Gray fox are not aggressive and an important part of our delicate ecosystem. We have encroached on the habitat of wildlife and it is our obligation of humanity to live harmoniously with them and take steps to keep them safe.

Meet the Rescue Dogs of NLAS! ELLIE is our official greeter and hostess with the mostest. If you’ve been to any of our events or for a visit you’ve surely met and fell head over heels in love this vivacious girl. The epitome of unconditional love and boundless joy! You wouldn’t even notice she only has 3 legs! LENNOX is our super handsome guardian and protector. He was rescued after our founder saw him hit by a car and dragged about 50 feet. Miraculously, he jumped up a...nd ran and Gina chased him for hours but eventually lost him. She was able to track him down at the shelter a few days later and learned he’d be euthanized for aggression if not claimed within 5 days. Well obviously she couldn’t let that happen and rescued him instead. He is not aggressive in any way and loves being part of the New Life family! MAX spent 7 years in a laboratory and has tattoos on his ear to prove it. He is the most perfectly sweet, gentle boy. Max is completely blind due to diabetes and it is a labor of love to manage his insulin and keep his eyes comfortable. He is currently getting 3 different medicated drops/gel in each eye 3 times a day. As we type, Max is at the eye specialist for a recent flare up. REBECCA is one of 6 dogs rescued from a laboratory in Colorado in 2013. She is a gentle giant, our founder’s BFF and also remains with her sister, Jane, rescued from the same lab at the same time. Becca has battled Valley Fever for the past year and it was touch and go for many months but she is now negative, though she will likely remain on meds for the rest of her life. JANE was also rescued from the same Colorado lab as Rebecca and is an absolute goober. Her funny gestures and mannerisms crack us up as well endear her to all who meet her! Jane had recently had pups at the time she was rescued (she still had milk) and sadly we will never know what happened to her babies. #NationalRescueDogDay
