I made a new friend last week. His name is Richard. Richard is homeless. He lives out of his car. ... When I met him, he was knocking on the doors of the church. I learned that he was between jobs and was on his way out of state. A few months ago, someone at our church helped Richard with some food and gas money. He had come back to say thanks. And this time, he didn’t leave empty handed. I drove with him to a nearby gas station to fill his tank with gas. And I also had the opportunity to lead him into a personal relationship with Jesus. I need a new start. I grew up Catholic, got baptized, but that’s about it. He explained to me how he was filled with anger and he didn’t know what to do about it. I said, Now that you have Jesus in your life now, you must forgive your enemies. He shook his head and expressed disbelief. I can’t.. You’re right. You can’t. But God can. I explained to him how Jesus prayed for forgiveness over his enemies while he hung on the cross. The same enemies that were responsible for his death, He forgave them. While dying for them. Wow, only God could do that, Richard replied. Richard is right. Only God could do that. Richard gave me a hug, thanked me, and we went our separate ways. -Darren Emory See more

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dear New Life, We just wanted to write to you today and collectively honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He stood up for equality and became a civil rights pioneer in a time where hate was common. ... You might also know that Dr. King was a disciple of Christ first. And therein lies the legacy that we are invited to continue: a life lead by love instead of the great burden of hate. That if we are in Christ, we are not just a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) but we are called to bring life and love wherever we areit is our love that identifies us with Christ (John 13:35). Therefore, as we look around our world today and see similarities to the divided world that Dr. King was so impassioned to change: Where there is anger, we can lead with empathy and understanding. Where there is gossip, we can choose not to participate. Where there is slander, we can pray for those we disagree with. Where there is hate, we can lead with love. We pray that this week you seize opportunities to let go of the burden of hate and to stick with love! We are so proud that you, New Life Family, have always embraced a culture where we act, vote, look, and talk a lot different from each other, yet we always lead with love. Keep it up!
