It’s National Fresh Breath Day! Even though we’re all wearing masks these days, it’s still unpleasant to have bad breath. So what are the best ways to combat it? First, it’s important to understand what causes bad breath. Food particles left behind on the tongue or in between teeth are broken down by bacteria in the mouth and this process releases odor producing chemicals that cause halitosis (bad breath). Dry mouth, plaque, infections in the gum and teeth, smoking, and foods... such as onions and garlic can also contribute to bad breath. One of the best ways to prevent bad breath is with good oral hygiene that can limit food reside and plaque buildup. The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once a day, and rinsing with an alcohol-free mouth wash. If you have dry mouth you can also chew sugar-free gum to help stimulate saliva that washes away food particles. Just be sure to look for gum that is stamped with the ADA’s Seal of Acceptance.
