On Sunday, June 13, 2021 a Newark Police officer was conducting extra patrol in the 5000 block of Thornton Ave due to a recent uptick in shoplifting incidents in the area. At approximately 5:00 pm, an officer observed a male subject exit a business holding two buckets full of merchandise. When the subject saw the officer, he dropped the items and began running into the residential neighborhood nearby. The subject was seen jumping into a rear yard, and shortly after reappeared... on a rooftop. The subject was last seen running across several rooftops in an attempt to flee from officers. A short time later, the subject was located nearby walking on the sidewalk. Based on where the subject was first observed on the roof and where he was located, he likely ran across approximately nine rooftops. Officers made contact with the subject, a 29-year old male out of Hayward, and ultimately arrested him for an active felony warrant out of Southern California related to possessing a loaded firearm. Additionally, charges of misdemeanor probation violation, possession of a controlled substance, shoplifting, and prowling on private property were added due to this incident. He was booked at Fremont Jail. Thank you to the residents who assisted in providing information leading to his capture.

Illegal Fireworks Seized & Citation Issued Last night, while Newark Police officers were on a special detail for illegal fireworks suppression, officers observed three subjects lighting fireworks in the area of Cherry St and George Ave. Officer Kapu made contact with an 18-year old male, and two male juvenile teens. Officer Kapu ultimately recovered several mortar style illegal fireworks. A follow up search conducted at one of the subject’s home resulted in the discovery of ...additional illegal fireworks. The adult subject was ultimately arrested for Health & Safety Code violation 12677 which results in a fine of up to $1,000 and/or 6 months in jail. The fireworks were seized for destruction and the subject was issued a citation and released. In an effort to address the concerns from residents, the Newark Police Department is conducting undercover operations to enforce firework violations. The Newark Police Department has a zero tolerance for illegal firework use. As a reminder, as tempting as it may be to celebrate July 4th early, ONLY "Safe & Sane" fireworks are allowed in Newark from midnight June 30 to midnight July 4. "Dangerous" fireworks are ALWAYS illegal in Newark. If you know someone or see someone who is in possession, selling and/or lighting fireworks, please call the Fireworks Hotline at (866)520-7233 (SAFE). #NewarkCA #Fireworks #Fireworksafety #Safety

Yesterday the Newark Police Department attended the funeral services honoring the life of Officer Jimmy Inn of the Stockton Police Department who was tragically killed in the line of duty on May 11, 2021. Officer Jimmy Inn is one of the very few Cambodian-American peace officers in the State of California. Van Tieu reached out to our very own Newark Police Captain Chomnan Loth who is also Cambodian-American, to share insight on the impact of this tragic loss within the Cambodian-American law enforcement community. The group photo is of the CA Cambodian-American officers (and 2 firefighters). We send our deepest condolences to Officer Inn’s family, friends, the Stockton Police Department and the greater Stockton community.

This week is National Police Week. President John F. Kennedy first issued the proclamation for Peace Officer's Memorial Day and National Police Week in 1962. May 15th has also been recognized as National Peace Officers Memorial Day. Unfortunately, the recognition also comes with the loss of Police Officers in our State within the last 24 hours. On Monday night, an Officer with the San Luis Obispo Police Department was tragically killed in the line of duty. Moments ago, we were notified that an Officer with the Stockton Police Department (Stockton Police Department) also lost his life in the line of duty today. We send our most heartfelt condolences to both the San Luis Obispo Police Department and the Stockton Police Department and the friends & family of the fallen officers. We mourn your hero’s loss alongside you.

This year is NPD's 5th Annual Toy Drive, and it may have been our best yet! We have partnered with CALICO and Safe Alternatives to Violent Environments , two organizations that support families and children effected by family violence to donate our toys to. We want to give a very huge thank you to everyone who was able to donate during such a difficult year. The amount of toys we received was a largest amount yet. We are overwhelmed by Newark's generosity and thoughtfulness.... It's one of the many reasons that makes Newark such a great place! Also just want to give a special shout out to a Newark family that has donated for the past 4 years. This year they were able to make their largest amounts of toys to our cause yet with $1,500 worth of toys! POLICE NEGOTIATORS CONVINCE BARRICADED FELON TO SURRENDER On Thursday October 15, 2020 at approximately 8:40 a.m., Newark Police patrol officers attempted to contact a subject who was wanted on a felony firearms arrest warrant and parole violations at a home located in the 6100 block of Castillon Drive. The subject was identified as 38 year-old Jaray Washington of Newark. Based on investigative information, Washington was believed to be within the residence and was consider...ed armed and dangerous. In their attempts to safely take Washington into custody, police officers evacuated a seven-year old, a seventeen-year old and two adult female occupants from the residence in question. Washington refused to comply with officers’ orders to come outside and surrender. Due to the circumstances and for the safety of the surrounding community members, a perimeter was established to contain the developing situation. Additionally, neighboring residents were asked to either shelter-in-place or evacuate from adjoining homes. The Newark and Union City Police Department’s Crisis Negotiation teams (CNT) along with members from their respective Special Weapons and Tactics teams (SWAT) were requested to the scene. After nine hours of coordinated efforts between the units, the specially trained police officers from the departments’ Crisis Negotiations teams were able to convince the subject to exit the residence and surrender to the waiting SWAT officers. At approximately 5:49 p.m., Jaray Washington of Newark, was taken into custody without further incident. During the investigation, an associate of Mr. Washington’s, Mr. Gerrick Waller, a 28-year-old male of Oakland, was also arrested for having a, no-bail, arrest warrant for a parole violation related to felony criminal threats and firearms violations. Mr. Washington was ultimately arrested for having a felony, no bail, arrest warrant for second degree robbery and a felony arrest warrant for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The Newark Police Department will be seeking additional charges of resisting, delaying or obstructing a peace officer and prohibited felon in possession of ammunition. We would like to take this moment to thank our community members for your continued support and patience during this difficult incident. Captain Jonathan Arguello will be the point of contact for media inquiries. A Spare the Air Alert has been issued from today 9/9 through Friday 9/11 #SpareTheAir Spare the Air, Bay Area Here is some additional information from the Bay Area Air Quality District Bay Area Air Quality Management District: "The orange skies this morning are a result of wildfire smoke in the air. Strong winds over the past few days transported ash from fires in northern California and the Sierra Nevada into the region.... These smoke particles scatter blue light & only allow yellow-orange-red light to reach the surface, causing skies to look orange. If smoke becomes too thick in a certain area, most of the light will be scattered & absorbed before reaching the surface, which may cause dark skies." . Safety Tips to Please Remember: - Hydrate! - If you have an air purifier, use it - Avoid leaving home. Shut windows/doors -Set a/c units & car vent systems to re-circulate to prevent outside air from moving inside - Wear a mask Here are a few photos that have been shared with us today. If you've taken any impressive photos of the sky in Newark today, please feel free to email to us! We'd love to share some of the photos on our social platforms. Email to [email protected]
