Congressman McClintock and I recently submitted comments to the State Board of Forestry about their proposed regulatory changes for development in Very High Fir...e Hazard Severity Zones. We highlighted concerns we have heard from constituents and local governments about how these regulations could prevent post fire rebuilding or make it cost prohibitive to do so. The State of California already has very strict building codes that have both driven up the cost to rebuild and disincentivized development and new home construction, driving the costs of all housing to record levels. These regulations would add another layer to the already burdensome requirements that would make this situation much worse. The local communities that are prone to wildfire and the residents who reside and rebuild there are the first line of defense in taking steps necessary to prevent wildfire. Passing the responsibility of the state and federal government to better manage it’s land onto those trying to rebuild their homes is a feckless attempt to drive residents from rural areas and the freedom to live where they choose. I urge the State Board of Forestry to take more time speaking directly with the people that would be harmed by these policies and to make changes to the proposed regulations that incorporates the feedback from people in the areas impacted.
