Update from the EGUSD on schools reopening. October 26, 2020 Dear Students, Families and Staff,... In a strong collaborative partnership with its Board of Education, labor partners and Sacramento County Public Health officials, the Elk Grove Unified School District will use the County’s Tier Metrics to help guide its decision-making for a phased-in approach to transition from a Full Distance Learning Model to a partial in-person Concurrent Instructional Model. As Sacramento County advances toward the orange tier, if the county turns orange by November 3rd, the District will begin a phased-in approach to reopen schools in alignment with the academic calendar. Should this happen, the District will provide staff with two weeks to prepare for the reopening of schools. Contingent Phase-In of Students If Sacramento County turns orange by November 3rd: November 17, 2020: PreK-3 and Jesse Baker School (includes all respective Special Education programs and services); December 8, 2020: Grades 4-6 (includes all self-contained Special Education programs and services from all grade levels, up to and including programs serving students who are age 22); January 7, 2021: Secondary (grades 7-12) If the county does not meet the orange tier milestone in November, all Elk Grove Unified students will continue in full distance learning and the District will plan to reopen schools with the Concurrent Instructional Model at the start of the second term, which begins January 4, 2021. For now, parents do not need to take any action. Christopher R. Hoffman, School Superintendent for the Elk Grove Unified School District stated, Our first priority is student and staff safety. Our second priority is maintaining learning continuity and providing our students with the resources they need for their social, emotional and academic growth and development. We are addressing those two priorities now in our full distance learning model and with carefully planned small in-person cohorts. As health conditions permit, our partial in-person concurrent instructional model allows us to transition back to school with added flexibility to return, without disruption to student progress, to full distance learning should health conditions change. Ideally, we want all students to come back to school for unrestricted access to the full array of academic programs, student services, school events and extracurricular and cocurricular activities and I am confident that we will get there as our community continues to work together to stop the spread of COVID-19 with or without a vaccine. Details about the Concurrent Instructional Model and what parents will need to know and be ready for will be provided in a presentation to the Board scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, 2020 with the open session scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m. A board agenda will be posted online by close of business Monday, October 26th, and public comment will close at 8:00 a.m. the day of the meeting. Information will be posted to the District’s website at: www.egusd.net. Parents are encouraged to listen in on the upcoming virtual Board of Education meetings: October 28, 2020 Special Board Workshop: 10:15 a.m. 3:00 p.m. Frequently Asked Questions: Do families need to do anything right now? No. Families should be monitoring their email for updates at this time. They are also welcome to tune into the Elk Grove Unified special board workshop on October 28, 2020 to hear the details about the Concurrent Instructional Model and phased-in plan approach. Will safety precautions be taken at schools? Yes. Those details will be made available for families to review. Will there be transportation? Transportation information and details will be provided during the October 28th board presentation. However, due to the social distancing guidelines, we expect that there will be limited capacity. Will students be able to attend school 5 days a week? No. We will have to maintain an alternating schedule in accordance with the health and safety guidelines. The current bell or time schedules will remain with some minor changes and students will be assigned to days for attendance at school and in class. Will my student have to change schools or teachers if they stay in full distance learning? No. For learning continuity, students will stay with their teacher of record and at their resident school. If a parent chooses to make a change, we would follow regular teacher change request procedures. Can parents change from full distance learning to in-person partial concurrent instruction at any time? Yes, but we ask parents to work with their child’s teacher and school to prepare for the student’s return ahead of time. How will I be able to obtain the information I need? During the special Board of Education Workshop an overview of the Concurrent Transitional Model will be provided. The District’s website will provide easy access to detailed information specific to school schedules, health and safety classroom set-up, family resources, food and nutritional services, and more. EGU News and Friday updates will continue to provide timely information about all aspects of the transition. We ask everyone to remain vigilant about wearing a face mask, maintaining social distance and handwashing to help turn Sacramento County orange by the end of October. For those who can, remember to get a flu shot for you and your family. Lastly, take a moment to login to the ParentVUE portal to check your student’s grades, attendance and communication from their teacher. For parents who need assistance with ParentVUE activation, please contact your school site or the Family and Community Engagement Office at (916) 831-5530 and translations and interpretation services for families are available at (916) 793-2953. Thank you and stay safe and stay healthy, EGUSD Leadership http://www.egusd.net/covid-19-community-le/october-26-2020/

Superintendent's Update, Oct. 16, 2020: To Staff and the Twin Rivers School Community, As counties throughout the state continue to progress toward more in-per...son operations, I am sure that you, like me, follow the news closely with a key question in mind, When may we return to in-person instruction? I suppose the question is not simply when may we return, which would be answered by the health statistics and county conditions. The more important and nuanced question is when should we return, given that we have stated from the outset that our highest and unshakeable priority is the health and well-being of our employees and students. This question will be answered by the Twin Rivers Unified Board of Trustees. Our Board will study the facts and consider the health rating in our county, with deep consideration for the areas of our county that have been more impacted by COVID-19. They will thoughtfully consider the opinions of students, families and our employees, and our proper implementation of public health guidelines.
