Today we thought we'd share one of our favorite quotes, engraved on a rock just outside the front doors of the National Steinbeck Center.

Remembering Ed Ricketts who passed away on May 11, 1948. He was gentle but capable of ferocity, small and slight but strong as an ox, loyal and untrustworthy, generous but gave little and received much. His thinking was as paradoxical as his life. John Steinbeck

We value virtue but do not discuss it. The honest bookkeeper, the faithful wife, the earnest scholar get little of our attention compared to the embezzler, the tramp, the cheat. - John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley

June 1960, Steinbeck commissions the construction of a special vehicle a sturdy truck on the back of which is mounted a camper in which he can sleep, cook and work. He names the truck "Rocinante" in honor of Don Quixote's horse.

For this week’s #TeachingTuesday we would like to make a very special Steinbeck Young Authors announcement. Please give a great big round of applause to this year’s Day of Writing Award Recipients from our Middle School Day of Writing Contest. We had so many thoughtful and exceptional essay entries this year and it was tough for our judges to decide on the ones that stood out the most. This year’s award recipients, went above and beyond and excelled in crafting strong narr...atives that captivated the reader with their insightful observations and arguments. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful educators and administrators who participated in this year’s Steinbeck Young Authors Day of Writing, now on its 18th year. We hope that you will join us again in Fall to continue the next chapter of our award-winning Steinbeck Young Authors Program and shape the next generation of authors. We invite all of our followers to congratulate our young authors in the comments below. If you are a teacher or educator and would like to learn more about the Steinbeck Young Authors program and how you and your students can participate, email [email protected]. See more

You may have your own favorite #steinbeck book but have you ever wondered which authors or books were Steinbeck’s favorites? John Steinbeck was known to be a real fan of Robert Louis Stevenson who ironically also left a mark on the Monterey Peninsula. Specifically, Steinbeck loved Treasure Island. Steinbeck even linked the story to the area. To quote Steinbeck himself, Monterey is a city with a long and brilliant literary tradition. It remembers with pleasure and some glory that Robert Louis Stevenson lived there. ‘Treasure Island’ certainly has the topography and the coastal plan of Pt. Lobos. Pictured here is a cover of the famous book and a beautiful shot of Pt. Lobos. #nationalsteinbeckcenter #steinbeck #johnsteinbeck #robertlouisstevenson #treasureisland #montereybay #montereypeninsula #pointlobos #greatauthors #reading
