It has been 2. FULL. YEARS. since my last alcoholic drink. The surface level parts of my sobriety: My energy levels are higher, thought processes are clearer, my sleep is better, and I don’t stress. I feel strong and healthy rather than bloated and tired. ... Here’s the truth that most don’t know: I was a highly functional addict, just as so many people are even if they won’t admit it. It may not have been as obvious in my life as it is some others because I had a successful career and I was seemingly happy overall, but I was drinking way too much which was bound to lead me down a road that could alter the course of my life and the life of those I love most. The fallout: At first people would insist that I drink, or make derogatory remarks about my choice to stop. It became obvious that some felt as though I was judging or somehow critiquing them since I no longer drank- which wasn’t true, this decision was for me and my life. As such, my relationship with many of those people has become more distant or even nonexistent as time has gone on. What happened next: I’m a better husband and father, I’ve enjoyed more raw and meaningful conversations with the people in my life than ever before. My career has grown in ways that I never would have imagined. My fitness and health are now non negotiable. Why I’m really typing all this: There are many highly functional and highly successful addicts. The truth is that society makes it really hard for people to quit something like drinking alcohol. You never know what someone struggles with or what internal battles they could be trying to work through. Be a good friend. Support the people in your life that are trying to better themselves, even if it doesn’t make sense to you. Try to understand and support not degrade and enable. So here we are: This chapter of my life is still in it’s infancy but I feel so blessed to be where I am today. Life’s possibilities are endless but our time is finite. The last few days have been an experience, to say the least. Brooke was bucked off her horse during her riding lesson, and after a couple different hospitals, an ambulance transport, lots of X-rays, tons of doctors and nurses (UC Davis Children’s hospital is amazing) Brooke is on her way to recovery. Although she has more X-rays and follow up appointments at UC Davis Monday we are hopeful that she will avoid the need for surgery. Thank you to all of the friends and family that texted, called, or stopped by the house to visit Brooke. She is doing much better today and hopeful to be out of her cast in no time. Thank you all again for your well wishes, they really do mean a lot. Merry Christmas friends!

It’s not often that the four of us get to be together in one place with all the kids, but what a special evening it was last weekend and it couldn’t have come at a better time. We lost our Granny last week and my mom put a special evening together for us to spend as a family being present and healing with one another. The loss of Granny left a hole in our hearts that will never be filled, but in the hardest and darkest hours of life we always have one another to lift us up. I am so blessed to have this family as part of my foundation to keep me humble through the highs and pick me up during my lows. I love each and every one of them and I can’t imagine life any other way. I miss my Granny everyday more than words can describe but I have my people, and for that I’m grateful.
