Congratulations BCSD!
Meet Lisa Simmelink, our Level 2 Instructor! What brings her joy? "My family brings me the greatest joy - especially, being with my 2 children and watching the...m grow and experience new things fills my heart beyond words. I am also filled with joy when I have the opportunity to make music WITH people. They can be young or old, experienced or inexperienced - the joy of making music in community is one of my favorite things." Meet Lisa at our Summer Institute!
Thank you to the amazing Dr. Ferrell for being our guest on this very special day #internationalwomensday2021
We are proud to announce the direct collaboration with Bakersfield College's (new) Collegiate NAfME chapter for the remainder of the semester in efforts to help them have a successful start. This is the beginning to a wonderful relationship between students from both schools to build a strong sense of community and make better future educators. Congratulations again to our sister school for this great accomplishment!

Excited to be presenting at the California All-State Music Education Conference (CASMEC) next month! This dream team of music supervisors will share their best practices and strategies for music educators as we move music education back to the classroom and rehearsal hall.
Big thank you again to Monique Van Willingh for her presentation about the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Program at the Longy School of Music of Bard College, which focuses on music education and social justice. She also spoke to us about intersectionality as a reflective tool, and taught us how we can use this to promote social change. In her words, "Change happens through compassion."
Hope to see you there!
In honor of Filipino-American History Month, join music educators Tiffany Unarce Barry, Kassey Castro, Czarina Jimenez, and Lorelei Batislaong as they share the...ir lived experiences of being Filipino Americans. They discuss being children of immigrants, assimilation into the predominant culture in the US, Filipino representation (or lack thereof), colorism within the Filipino community, and the model minority myth. They discuss the joys of being Fil-Am (the food and the epic Karaoke) and the widely unknown history of activism that is embedded in being Filipino in the States. We will air a live screening of the discussion this Thursday, October 29th, at 6:00 pm cst, here on Facebook and on the Decolonizing the Music Room youtube channel. Maligayang Filipino-American History Month!
There are a lot of discussions happening regarding race and prejudice, especially in music! We wanted to add to the conversation by bringing Black American comp...osers of Classical Music and their works to light as a resource to educate and inspire. Just as the United States is inherently dependent on the contributions and innovations of Black people, these composers have contributed an extraordinary amount to the development of American music. There's so much more to say on the matter, and so much research to explore and cite, but ultimately, we hope this post will encourage you to take action--whether donating to organizations that promote Black musicians (slide 23), seeking out and performing music by Black composers (slide 22), learning more about the prejudices these composers faced by reading further (slides 16-21) or simply, taking the step to engage in difficult conversations about race, equality, and justice, and to learn more. If you have a favorite composer whose music or life inspires you, let us know in the comments. Black lives matter. Part II, Black Vocalists in Classical Music, is underway. **EDIT 6/15 Hey y'all, kindly disregard the weird grammar, capitalization & tense mistakes throughout. Feel free to correct phrases!** Research/infographic compiled by Catherine Chapman (catherinechapmanmusic.com)
