My second week here in New York. I am working in ICU of 700+ beds hospital. Approximately 98% of the patients are diagnosed with Covid-19. 140 patients in Inten...sive Care Unit (ICU) on ventilators, all of them are fighting for their lives due to this vicious virus. Social distancing is 6 ft but as a Respiratory Therapist, I am 6 inches away from my patients. Respiratory....breathing....airway and ventilator management. 2 Respiratory Therapist taking care of 20 patients on ventilators (normally max 5 vents per Therapist) This place is equivalent to a war zone. Except in a war zone one dies quickly. However, with Coronavirus one can’t breath for prolong period of time and progressively suffers from pain of procedure after procedure. As the doctors, nurses and respiratory therapist continue to treat them with all they have to give, knowing that death is the inevitable. According to healthcare workers here, COVID -19 is not prejudice towards elderly. There are many young adults and healthy people without underlying disease whom have died. A doctor was recently diagnosed with the virus and his entire family tested positive as well. Now they are all in ICU on ventilators fighting for their lives. A few simple steps here if followed could save yours or the life of your loved ones. Please protect your home and car, which are your personal space from the outside world. STOP wearing your masks and gloves in your car. Your car is your personal space. It has only your germs, so you don’t need protection from it. When you wear your glove in your car, you bring all of the outside worlds germs in to your world. Wear your mask and gloves when you arrive at your destination. When you return to your car, put your mask in a ziplock bag and leave it in your car for reuse. If it is cloth wash it. Discard your glove in a trash bag. Use hand sanitizer rub till dry then get in your car. Don’t have hand sanitizer, I gotcha, put on a pair of new clean gloves. When you get home immediately wash your hands for 20 seconds before you touch anything. This will reduces the chance of you bringing germs from outside world to your personal space and home. STAY HOME as much as possible. Order your groceries online and have it delivered or pick it up at curbside. Most grocery store have this service. They are good...use them. Order anything else on Amazon and Costco. Figure it out and stay home. You could save a life most likely yours or your family’s.
