While numerous historical military moments happened on this day dating back to the pre-Revolutionary War days, June 16 has this distinction: From 1954 until 1970, the date is indelibly tied to the incubation and escalation of the Vietnam War. #VietnamWar #VietnamVeterans #WelcomeHome

The ship and its crew were cutting through the waters between Guam and the Philippines. It was calm on the seas and in the skies. Above, scattered clouds floated pale across the inky blackness.... #readslikeanovel #RealHeroes #TravisAirForceBase

We at CalVet wish the U.S. Army a happy birthday! We thank those who served and continue to serve, who built this nation and protect our Constitution, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice to let freedom ring! Charles Shay, a 96-year-old Native American who was an Army medic during the D-Day invasion, was the only American to attend D-Day’s 77th anniversary ceremonies at Carentan on June 5, 2021. Carentan was where paratroops set down at the beginning of the invasion, o...n June 6, 1944. Shay also was the only American veteran able to attend a June 6 ceremony at the American Cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer. The battle claimed 4,414 Americans, and the cemetery holds the graves of 9,386 who died during the D-Day landings and subsequent operations. Shay now lives in France, which was why he was able to attend. Survivors living in eAmerica and who might have been able to go were prohibited by Covid-19 travel restrictions. About 2,600 U.S. D-Day veterans are still living among the 150,000 involved in the invasion, according to the National D-Day Memorial. See more

Soldiers and Black Horse Troopers from the Army’s 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment from Fort Irwin staged in Barstow as part of the 38-mile Long Walk in December 2019. The traditional event, now entering its 23rd year, ends with the soldiers marching from Barstow’s historic Harvey House up the hill to visit with residents of the Veterans Homes of California-Bartow, sharing stories and experiences. On the Army’s 246th birthday and Army Appreciation Day CalVet extends its appreciation to the Army for its continued dedication to the veterans at our Barstow home. Happy birthday! $25 Million Grant Program Included for Veterans in Governor’s California Comeback Plan The Veterans Support for Self Reliance Grant Ensures Services for California’s Most Vulnerable Veterans... We are grateful for Governor Newsom’s leadership regarding support for our most vulnerable veterans. This program closes a crucial gap in care for veterans who are in need of supportive services for daily living, yet do not meet the level of skilled nursing or assisted living, said CalVet Secretary, Dr. Vito Imbasciani. https://bit.ly/3ojoQfd #RealSolutions #CAcomeback #MyCalVet

A 99-year-old California man was aboard the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor during the Dec. 7, 1941 Japanese attack, and 79 years later remembers vividly the day then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared would forever "live in infamy." Louis Conter of Grass Valley told FOX 40 he was not surprised at all when he saw the first Japanese planes attacking over Oahu. #PearlHarbor #WorldWarII #Veterans #MyCalVet

Interesting article if you are a veteran seeking employment. Although we think that some of these companies could increase the percentage of employees who are veterans. #HireVeterans #MyCalVet #Veterans

The U.S. Navy has selected a woman to command a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier for the first time in American history. Captain Amy Bauernschmidt was selected for the position though it's not known, at this point, which of the Navy's 11 nuclear-powered carriers she will command. This is a great step forward for women in the military. Bravo Navy! #MyCalVet #USNavy #WomenInTheMilitary

"Being from Syria helps me in a lot of ways, including bringing diversity in my section, being paid more for knowing another language, and being a valuable asset to my unit as I communicate with locals and translate information," US Army SPC Fadi Mallouhi said. "It could save someone's life and keep people within our unit from being disrespectful to the civilians here." SPC Mallouhi is a computer/detection systems repairer with Headquarters Support Company, 628th Aviation Support Battalion, 28th Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade, currently serving in the Middle East. #Military #USArmy #ArmyStrong #Syria
