Kevin Symons on TRIUMPH OF LOVE, from our 2014-15 season: "What a fantastic experience I had being a part of TRIUMPH OF LOVE! It is a musical based on a hilarious 1732 French commedia dell’arte play and, thanks to A. Jeffrey Schoenberg, the costumes were gorgeous! The brilliant Kristen Chandler directed and the incredible Brent Crayon was Musical Director. I mean, playing Hermocrates, I got to be in love with Shannon Warne, sing a funny/touching duet with my sister Eilee...n Barnett, share the stage with friends Misty Cotton, Stan Chandler, Scott Harlan and Jeffrey Scott Parsons (all MTG members) AND wear an outrageous wig and waaaay too much makeup!! What’s not to love?! Thanks, MTG!!" Broadway Star John Sloman in SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, from our 2014-15 season: "I was supremely fortunate enough to study with Craig Carnelia, the brilliant lyricist of SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, back in New York. He changed my life, both as a singing actor and an educator, with his heady, human and masterful insights into the world of the Musical Theatre. What a thrill and an honor it was to be able to bring Craig's creation to life in the MTG production of the show. " CAST... J.J. Broadway Star Stan Chandler on CITY OF ANGELS, from our 2013-14 season: "Playing Stine in CITY OF ANGELS was a dream come true. Prior to this, I’d almost always been hired as a tenor, but when Joel Bishoff cast me, I was able to flex a little baritone! The score is really jazzy and cool, and I think the rest of the cast would agree with me that it was a joy to sing. The show isn’t produced very often, as there isn’t an easily rent-able set and it’s a very stylized piece. Th...e cool thing about Musical Theatre Guild is, without a set or big production values, you still walk away from a performance understanding the heart and soul of a show. I think this was made vividly clear with CITY OF ANGELS." National Tour Star Pamela Hamill on RUTHLESS!, from our 2013-14 season: "RUTHLESS was part of our 2013-2014 season, our first at the Moss Theater in Santa Monica. It's based on the play and movie The Bad Seed. I think it was the first time I worked with Todd Nielsen (Sylvia St. Croix) where he was not the director or choreographer! He was fabulous in drag and very funny. Also it was the first time I had worked with Lindsey Alley (Miss Thorne/Miss Block) since the first-...ever workshop of the musical PAPER MOON back around 1990 where she played 'Addie Pray' and was maybe 10-12 years old! That's one of the things I love about doing MTG shows, working with old friends and making new ones. I still use my character's (Lita Encore) big number, "I Hate Musicals", for auditions and it always gets a laugh. A little-known fact, it was the first time, at least for me, that our first complete run-thru without stopping was also our one and only performance!" TBT - Broadway Star Doug Carfrae on DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY , from our 2013-2014 season: "I had never seen or even heard much about DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY. It had not been a success on Off-Broadway because the book was a little quirky, but it had a nice score. It was the perfect show for Musical Theatre Guild. MTG takes little known shows and flops and gives them a beautifully sung reading. With Calvin Remsberg as director, Jim May as musical director and Peggy Hick...ey as choreographer, I knew DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY would get as good a rendition/reading as possible. We put the show together in our allotted 25 hours and I was really proud of the way it turned out. The cast sang the music beautifully and the staging and choreography gave the audience a chance to see/hear what DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY was all about. For me, I got a chance to work on a show that I might never have had an opportunity to do. It was also a special treat for me to work opposite Helen Geller." TBT - Lowe Taylor Cunningham on WONDERFUL TOWN, from our 2013-14 season: "Receiving the opportunity to play Ruth in WONDERFUL TOWN for Lewis Wilkenfeld and MTG was one of the highlights of my acting career. First, the score is so delicious and really allows Ruth to show off her contralto chops! Secondly, the cast across the board assembled by MTG for this gem of a show was top notch and each and every one a dream to work with. One fun memory for me from this show - I can'...t choose just one and I could likely choose 10! - is playing the dinner party scene. Kristi Holden, Jeffrey Scott Parson and Will Collyer and scene partners that dreams are made of! And Lewis' direction really allowed us to play, shine and be our silliest selves. It was too much fun every night! Oh, and my other favorite memory occurred post show when Broadway legend Roger Bart congratulated me and said, "That's the lowest note I've ever heard a woman sing! Are you a bass??" It really gave me a nice giggle!" Memory Monday - National Tour Star Robin De Lano on IRMA LA DOUCE, from our 2009-10 season: "IRMA LA DOUCE was my first lead at MTG! I have so many great memories of this show, but one that takes the cake, has to do with the man, the legend, Joe Hart. A small Inside scoop-in every show, if we can, someone will end a line ‘with a script.’ Since it’s so obvious we have to carry around scripts. So, one of the actors says, ‘Have you seen her?’ and Joe’s line is ‘Yes! I have! Sh...e was running. Fast, through the streetscarrying a script!’ It was the best, because not only did I get to work with all these talented men, but I finally had the ‘script’ line said about me! It felt like a MTG rite of passage, and the moment I really felt indoctrinated into this super talented family!" Memory Monday - Broadway Star Beth Malone on FADE OUT - FADE IN, from our 2009-10 season: "My experience rehearsing and performing FADE OUT FADE IN was fantastic from beginning to end although I was a bit overwhelmed initially to be playing a role originated by the incomparable Carol Burnett. Lewis Wilkenfeld’s direction, made me feel like I could explore and play as much as I wanted, which was really freeing, and also a whole lot of fun. As the performance approached I do ...remember still feeling anxious, because you're always shot out of a cannon with MTG, but again Lewis and actually everyone, encouraged me to just let it fly and that's what I did. I remember the performances flew by because the show was so buoyant. It bounced along on waves of laughter and applause. The audiences made me feel like I could do no wrong. By curtain call I was fully living my FADE OUT FADE IN dream. That's the beauty of MTG, you get to have a condensed experience that feels very satisfying. I only hated that it was over too fast, but I'll always be grateful to have played that amazing part and to have done it with such support and love." Memory Monday - Jenny Gordon-Maurer on THE MOST HAPPY FELLA from our 2008-2009 season: "THE MOST HAPPY FELLA at MTG was like a dream come true for me. When I was 4 years old, my parents, who were already established performers with the wonderful Long Beach Civic Light Opera, wanted to see if I had the "bug". So, the 3 of us auditioned and were subsequently cast in LBCLO’s production of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA. My world would forever be changed. In fact, I loved being on stage... so much that I didn't understand why I didn't have any lines!! Even as a 4 year old, I wanted my "moment in the spotlight." I watched and studied everyone during rehearsals. My favorite performer was Kelly Britt, who played Cleo. I memorized every one of her lines and songs, and would sing "Ooh My Feet" day and night. Yes, I was 4 years old singing, "But the big son-of-a-bitch hurts the most!" A true theater kid. So the fact that I was cast as Cleo in MTG'S production of this exquisite, but rarely mounted musical was absolute kismet. Add to that, working with the incomparable Calvin Remsberg as Director and a brilliant MTG cast, let's just say the 4 year old Jenny Gordon finally got her moment in spotlight!"
