All of Me, written by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons, was initially turned down by every publisher to whom they sent it. But the lyrics Your goodbye left me with eyes that cry, How can I go on, dear, without you? touched the recently-widowed vaudeville star Belle Baker, and days later she introduced All Of Me on the radio. First recorded in 1931 by Ruth Etting, All of Me has continued to win over audiences ever since. In 1932 not only was it included in Fox Studios’... film Careless Lady, but incredibly three renditions of the song charted, with both Louis Armstrong and Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra reaching #1! Since then it has been recorded countless times by artists as wide-ranging as Ella Fitzgerald and Willie Nelson. In fact, even Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney recorded it as a duet. I’ll give my all to you with Leah Zeger and Ira Gonzalez. https://youtu.be/0HqnwOVYWJ0

Clouds and silver linings. This metaphor dates back to 17th-century poet John Milton who penned: Was I deceiv'd, or did a sable cloud Turn forth her silver lining on the night? I did not err; there does a sable cloud... Turn forth her silver lining on the night, And casts a gleam over this tufted grove. Three centuries later, Jerome Kern and B.G. DeSylva wrote Look For the Silver Lining. Originally for "Zip! Goes a Million", the song was popularized by Marilyn Miller in both Ziegfeld’s Broadway hit "Sally" and its Academy Award-nominated film version (one of Hollywood’s first full sound/full-color films!). This Kern/DeSylva tune opened CBS Radio’s The Billie Burke Show, and was performed by Judy Garland in Till Clouds Roll By. Recently, it was featured in a memorable dance scene in Downton Abbey. The fabulous India Carney joins the family of legendary singers who have made this song their own. https://youtu.be/iUM8rqmz4L0"
