Al loved the Field of Honor. Eight years ago he suggested we should include a display of American flags that have flown over our history. We all nodded - great idea. Al actually purchased the flags of our history with his own money and got the display started. (He was eventually reimbursed). Al also started the patriotic chalk art at the field, contacting artists across Southern California. As all fifth graders from MVUSD visit the field with lesson plan in hand, we will remind them of the wonderful man who created two of their favorite sections.
Stan Scheer was a member of the Rotary Club of Murrieta in 2009 when he helped pound rebar and set up flags for the first Field of Honor. Surveying the result, including a California Medal of Honor section designed by Bob Bryant and the Local Hero section honoring our neighbors who have died in service since 2003, Stan decided that his students of the Murrieta Valley Unified School District would benefit by attending. So, since 2010, all MVUSD fifth graders have been bussed to the field every year with a lesson plan in hand (there were virtual visits this year). As you read about the impressive credentials of the man, Murrieta Rotarians cite Stan's superb leadership skills - he was both caring and effective. And, it is clear that Stan's legacy permeates the current district leadership - his influence carries on.
An amazing group of volunteers!
Thanks, Jimmy, just beautiful.
Beautiful job, Doreen.
The very special 2020 Field of Honor has come to a close. In spite of COVID restrictions our sponsors, volunteers and visitors were wonderful. Community support was phenominal. See you all next year. Ken and Susan Dickson picked up their flags. The National Charity League Mothers and Daughters were cool volunteers.
